Univisión Gets Higher Ratings Than All English-language Networks, Officially Qualifying Don Francisco For Sainthood

Univision_Ratings_Winner_9_7_07.jpg Remember how innocent the TV ratings world was before last Monday, when Nielsen Media Research did away with the Hispanic Television Index and let us heathens (plus our Spanish-spouting networks) be counted as one with the rest of the nation? Well, from now on, consider those days nothing more than a thing of the past—the company’s single national panel has ranked Univisión as the number one ratings-getter among adults from 18 to 34. (Maybe gringos do watch telenovelas on mute, after all!) Applying to the week of August 27 to September 2nd, the data show that Univisión beat out all of the Big Three networks (NBC, CBS, ABC) and left its closest contender, FOX, in the dust by 11%.

Listen closely, and you’ll hear old guard TV execs shitting themselves as the word gets out. What’s the worst that could happen if this keeps up? An onslaught of programming that sells tits and variety more shamelessly than “Sabado Gigante”? Not even Rupert Murdoch could sell his soul for orchestrate that.
