Happy National Coming Out Day: Tony Plana’s Gay Friendliness Extends Past This Butch Shirt

Continuing with our National Coming Out celebration, (don’t forget to out your kids here, folks), we turn now to a story about “Ugly Betty’s” Tony Plana who’s getting many kudos from AfterElton.com for playing a gay friendly grandpa named Ignacio to his suspiciously swishy, pre-teen grandson Justin:

Now that [Justin’s dad] is gone, gay fans can expect to see Ignacio help Justin on his journey to figuring out just who he is.
Plana explains the journey to acceptance wasn’t as long or difficult for the older man. “Ignacio’s a chef by profession. He loves the kitchen, he loves to cook. He’s an artist in his own right. And he has an artistic sensibility, a feminine side, nurturing, mothering type of father. He had to because he’s a widow and I think the shift for Ignacio is not so radical, is not so big, to see a little bit of himself in the kid or the kid in him.”

Awww, that’s so sweet. But we definitely don’t want to see the episode where Ignacio tells Justin about Leather Daddies.

Comments

Just wait for the episode where Abuelito Nacho will ask his gransdon, shaken from having been harrassed by some hood rat nacos in Bushwick: “Mijo, where are those putos who called you a faggot? I want to give ‘em a talking to!”

But I doubt it. The Ugly Betty vecindad is made to look like Park Slope before gentrification set in: just safe enough to pass for places where the upper middle class would want to move in and do some flipping.
