Marvel Comics Turns To Santeria, Captain America Turns Over In His Grave

Nerd/brujo alert! The editor-in-chief of Marvel Entertainment Inc, Joe Quesada, isn’t content with Anglo superheroes anymore. So he recently launched a new Latino team of superheros intended to integrate some of that “magical realism” we’re so famous for in literary circles. But this time, he didn’t fuck around with any symbolism. He went straight to the voodoo source:
Quesada says Eleggua and the team he leads, the Santerians, are the first all-Latino comic book team whose powers are derived from the Afro-Caribbean religion of santeria.
So parents, beware of your kids asking for pet chickens.

Not to be too trite, but will their hideout be a botanica?

At any rate, it seems that archrival “DC published a comic drawing upon Santeria’s Yoruba forbears in the early 90s.”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orishas_%28DC_Comics%29
