Author Rosie Molinary wants to remind you that Latinas can be just as shallow and materialistic as any other obnoxious teen girl. In her recent book, Hijas Americanas: Beauty, Body Image and Growing Up Latina, the South Carolina native takes a look at issues facing young Latinas in the U.S, and how such issues might have made Latinas the minority with the highest rate of plastic surgery procedures in this country. (Is this not taking into account the fact that we just happen to be the largest minority in this country? Food for thought. Or not, I guess. Food is for fatties.)

Of course, no discussion on plasticas is complete without at least one mention of… you guessed it! Quinceañeras!

“I found girls who had nose jobs when they were 15 or 16, sometimes for their quinceañeras,” or 15th birthday celebrations, said the former high school teacher from Charlotte.

Eh. A different sort of job than some of us got when we turned 15, but, hey! It’s the thought that counts.

I’d like to see that number in relation to the number of white girls who get surgeries, I mean if she’s going to explore the ethnic angle I’d like to know how significant that number really is.I live in Socal and the little girls in my affluent neighborhood get bolt ons in addition to a BMW when they turn 16. Nothing new here.

As long as they don’t get ass-reduction surgery, it’s all good.
