California Is Experiencing Armageddon

Califire_10.22.07jpg.jpg California is seriously burning! A series of fires are blazing throughout the state of California —at least twelve of them across seven counties according to the Los Angeles Times. The fires sprouted yesterday in Southern California in San Diego, Malibu, Orange County, Ventura County, among others and have since quickly expanded south to the Mexican border due to strong winds.
Firefighting units are working around the clock to contain the fires. Governor Arnold Schwarznegger has declared a state of emergency across various counties, thousands of homes have been evacuated, including the animals from the San Diego Zoo Wild Animal Park.
San Diego has been the county worst hit so far, where according to reports the sky is completely dark from the ashes. We hope everyone is OK in California. You can find a map of where the fires are taking place updated in real time after the jump.

Just FYI, we are in San Diego East County right now and it’s not the San Diego Zoo but the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Just so folks don’t think that Balboa Park is on fire, otherwise this just sucks.

The animals have not been evacuated from the zoo in the city. The animals from Wild Animal Park out in stickville have been evacuated, those are exotic wild animals that some cannot fend for themselves and others cannot be let loose in the wild, otherwise all the dogs in the area will be toast.(No pun intended)
Only the outer reaches of the county are on fire for now, the city and the suburbs are still safe to a degree, but the winds are 70 miles per hour and the fire is a absolutely not contained. There isn’t a breathing mask to be found in the county, every thing is sold out.
We’re in trouble.

How does this register on the unofficial scorecard?

Landowners in the canyons (home team): -12 (Distressed ponies and burnt down homes suck.)

Animals in captivity: -20

Greater L.A. area: Even. Traffic sucks, homes.

Increased fire insurance premiums (and by extension rents): -5

Migrant and minority workers for inexpensive demo and construction work when the ash clears (visiting team): 1 (It’s nature and the invisible hand’s terrifying way of saying ‘Thank you for being brown…don’t let la migra get you down…you’ve got an economy to recover and a burden of gentried hatred to bear…’)

Total: -36

Thinking about you, Califas.

Lesson one: Remove brush from around your home.

Lesson two: Ever hear of steel framing for homes? Want a home in the hills of California then use it!

Lesson three: Ever hear of plaster walls instead of dry wall? Would probably be an interesting combination with steel framing.

Lesson Four: If someone wants to live in California hills with brush what about supplementary Halon or CO2 systems in your home for activating during for your periodic evacuations

Lesson Five: Anyone in brush country ever think about emergency roof and outside wall sprinkler systems? (assuming your water pressure is not taken by the fire dept ) Just run your bathroom feed to the roof, turn it on and evacuate.

Yeah, yeah, I guess no one wants to pay for these little things.

@Doug… yeah for some reason i doubt that will cut it if everything else around you is burning to the ground…
