  • The chief of the Justice Department’s voting rights section offered an apology for saying minority voters “die first,” (true!), and now we’re totally dying to vote. [New York Times]
  • The Day Of The Dead street procession in L.A. pictured at right features skeletal musicians, corpse brides and a dead pimp. We are fondly reminded of many a family wedding. [LAist]
  • In New York City, El Dia de los Muertos is just another excuse to spend a lot of money on overpriced food. But, to be fair, sometimes eating a human skull just isn’t satisfying. Especially if it’s made of sugar. [NY Daily News]
  • Gringos are embarrassed to buy spooky Mexican decorations. We’re embarrassed by what happens to our Tio Pancho after two cups of atole. [The Village Voice]
  • Religious and political groups in Mexico and Ecuador think trick-or-treating is immoral and unpatriotic and would rather you buy food and toys for dead people. [The Latin Americanist]

    What? No slutty calaveras??

Also, it’s good to hear about the Catholic church taking on the big issues like poverty and crime, I mean Halloween.

You should’ve seen the look on people’s faces when I put on my lucha libre mask at yesterday’s Halloween party. They FUHREAKED! And all the little kids were scared to death, giving me weird looks and crying; a parent even asked me to take off the mask.

Hell, it was better than seeing a 60 year old woman in a cavewoman outfit.

Silver, red and white Lucha Libre Mask: $8
Freaked out gabacho spawn in the workplace: priceless.
