We Were The Only Latinos At Morrissey’s Concert Last Night

So apparently the whole Latinos loving Morrissey cult is a West Coast phenomenon. At least, that seemed to be the case at last night’s Morrissey concert here in New York City. We eagerly arrived at the door hoping to spot Latino hipsters to poke fun of as they sunk deep into depression while droning to Morrissey’s emotional tunes –but, alas, no cigar. There were very few Latinos, okay there was one, and for the most part everybody there was early thirties and white as Dick Cheney. In fact, we caught up with Morrissey’s publicist, Aleix Martinez, and inquired about the supposed inexplicable attraction that Latinos have to Morrissey. He told us that the Latino presence is more obvious when Morrissey plays in Los Angeles. To which we replied, “No Shit”. We’d gander that’s pretty much the case with anything in the former Mexican state, no? If you were at last night’s show and you are brown let us know. If you weren’t and don’t give a shit, enjoy the mini clip we shot last night after the jump.

I wasn’t at the show last night, but if I had been, you probably would’ve lumped me in with the gringos (fair skin/blue eyes, etc… the brown’s on the inside, baby!) I LOVE that the cousins in SoCal love Morrisey. Something about that just pleases me to no end. Yay!

I traveled to NYC for a Nine Inch Nails show a couple of years ago and was pleased to meet PortaRicans from Queens there.

i think it’s an aztlan thing. mexican american for sure, 2nd and 3rd gen to be even more specific. el paso loves him. so does san antonio. i caught morrissey recently at one of his ten l.a. palladium shows a few weeks ago, near sellouts all of them. and while i’ve seen many latino crowds in los angeles this was the most chicano. there were more white people in morrissey’s band than i saw in the entire 4000 plus crowd. and oh yeah, did you notice the veggie hot dogs for sale at the concession stand?

aztlan is still making its way to east coast. i can’t wait to see the mozzer on saturday.

i wish i were at one of the palladium shows in l.a., if only to make up for being denied seeing him play a show at the olympic auditorium for the vauxhall and i tour, a show that he cancelled.

Ok no. No no no. Hells no. It is NOT a Mexican or a West Coast thing. Is no one here from Miami? Am I the only person who grew up completely surrounded by Cubans who listened to nothing but Joy Division and the Moz?

Yeah, I didn’t get it then. Even after listening to my fair share of The Cure in college, I don’t really get it now. (I’m whiter than snow and was too busy listening to Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana in high school, but I digress)

Morrissey sells out every time he comes down. Hell, they stick one of the people who no one gave a shit about from The Smiths behind a turntable at a club and watch the fire code violations fly.

So yeah: not a Mexican or LA thing. Although you can kind of argue that Miami is basically LA with hispanics instead of hippies in charge.

@jps: um…maybe you had Portland, OR or Seattle in mind when you mentioned the hippies being in charge of L.A.
A quarter of the City Council and the mayor are raza (I don’t know about ‘hispanic’, in the second largest city in the country.

@pocho: Good point. I’ve never actually been to the west coast, and whenever someone describes LA to me it just sounds like insanity, and insanity = hippies in my mind.
