Would Everyone Please Stop Sewing Their Faces Shut?

quiet_riot10-22-07.jpg

The second Latin American face sewing story in a week has made its way to us today. This one is from La Paz, Bolivia where a group of legal prostitutes have sewn their lips together as part of a hunger strike to demand the mayor re-open their places of work.

“We are fighting for the right to work and for our families’ survival,” Lily Cortez, leader of the El Alto Association of Nighttime Workers, told local television

Although we imagine it sounded more like, “Mmmm..mmmm…mmm!”

“Tomorrow we will bury ourselves alive if we are not immediately heard. The mayor will have his conscience to answer to if there are any grave consequences, such as the death of my comrades,” she said, surrounded by about 10 prostitutes who had sewn their lips together with thread.

That “tomorrow” would actually be today, so we’ll keep an eye out for developments on that one. Meanwhile, to further ruin the mayor’s day, local students and other activists who are vehemently opposed to the reopening of the bars and brothels where the sex workers make their livings are also on a hunger strike. This dude should just pack it up and move here where everything’s only on fire or at risk of terrorism.
