On Tuesday, an American veteran seriously got his panties in a twist over a Mexican flag he found flying above an American flag outside a bar in Nevada and yesterday, presidential hopeful Barack Obama announced he won’t wear the American flag lapel pin that has been stapled to politician’s chests since September 12, 2001 because, as he puts it, “It’s become a substitute for true patriotism.” (Related? Hmmm…) Instead, Barack says he’ll show his patriotism by releasing banging reggaeton tracks that incite voter enthusiasm. (Oh and something about speaking out on important issues, but mostly the reggaeton thing.) What do you guys think? Has the American flag lost its relevance? Do tell.

the american flag is a symbol of americans, and represent democracy, freedom and chevys. But is the US a true democracy, are we ever free and which chevys are we talking bout. The car co. or the mexican restaraunt…..

I am siding with Barack on this one. It’s the same shit that happened with the AIDS red ribbon. The ribbon became the focus while the meaning behind it was lost. I think that the American flag, just like any other flag, is relevant but it is sometimes used as a cheap symbolic substitute for real issues. Context is all. That said, I am sick of seeing the flag posted everywhere. Patriotism goes way deeper than hanging a piece of fabric from your SUV.

Is Obama even revelant. The Clintons are wiping the floor with him and he has no shot at winning the whole chang banga bang if he did win the Democratic nomination for President…
What I want to know, who is Hilary naming as her vice presidential running mate…..

I hope Barack would be relevant in this election. Barry and Edwards are the only ones with any really coherent politics among the Dems. Not least to say amongst the more intelligent ones.
Kucinich, well, he’s a darker horse than Richardson is, and our boy Memo is pretty brown…

Relevance to what? Patriotism?
I don’t know, but I cringe when I see folks in my neighborhood hanging U.S. flags. I find it confrontational in a way; at least in my predominantly immigrant neighborhood being that I usually see crazy cauc’s wrapping themselves up in it to the tune of, “love it or leave it,” as opposed to embracing the idea that no one is afforded the luxury of choosing a place of birth and we should live our lives with said disposition, but still. Having said that, I hang a Mexican flag in my room as homage to the struggle of family, to the people of Chiapas and to the people on this planet who live the 3rd world struggle. To the David’s of the world.
Getting of his soapbox now,
