Latino New York lawmakers met with New York Governor Elliot Spitzer over breakfast recently to propose he sign a “don’t ask, don’t tell” order guaranteeing that undocumented residents there are able to access state services without having to report their immigration status. This comes in response to Spitzer’s new driver’s license policy that would require immigrants seeking a license to present a valid foreign passport. Great, good, whatever. What really caught our eye about this particular article, though, is the concluding paragraph:
[Assemblyman Jose] Peralta said, “[…] in the eyes of immigrants fighting for this cause, so people won’t get profiled, [Spitzer’s driver’s license policy] was a step back. Now it’s a three-tier system. So, in spite of that, we said [to Spitzer] if you could sign this executive order, don’t ask don’t tell, it will soften the blow, in terms of being able to swallow this.”
You guuuuuys, seriously! We’re LOLiterally over here.
