Insert Spilled Milk Joke: Breastfeeding Mom Torn Away From Child By Immigration Officials
14 November 2007, 12:00 PM. By Alex Alvarez
Immigration officials in Ohio detained 27-year-old Sayda Umanzor as she was in the middle of nursing her nine-month-old daughter:
When federal agents encountered Sayda Umanzor in a house in Conneaut October 26, the 27-year-old woman admitted to being in America illegally, “without papers.”
She also pointed to her nine month old girl, Brittany, whom she had been breastfeeding when agents rapped on the door.
The baby wailed as mom and dad were led away. And she cried incessantly over the next several days as she went without breast milk while mom was in jail, sick with worry.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE…ice, baby. Sorry.) don’t actually have a policy for how to handle cases where a detained mother is still breastfeeding. But, you know. “Dragging her away from her crying infant” is probably as good a policy as any, along with “kicking a kitten in the face” and “teasing an adorable baby chick about its weight.” ICE cold.
