Molly Crabapple Is Half Puerto Rican. And All Naughty.

“Molly Crabapple Is Half Puerto Rican,” is the subject line of the email that arrived in our inboxes this week about New York-based, burlesquey sketch artist Molly Crabapple. We don’t meet Puerto Ricans named Crabapple everyday, (even halfies), so we were intrigued enough to check out her website:

Molly learned to draw in a Parisian bookstore. She later drew her way through Morocco and Kurdistan, and once into a Turkish jail. Back in New York, she got her first illustration job doing covers for SCREW Magazine. She now wields her drawing pen for The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Playgirl, as well as jugglers, fire-eaters, and blogs that sell used panties.

And just like that, she was in our hearts. Turns out Molly runs a “happening” in New York City titillatingly entitled “Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School” where regular folks come to drink and draw:

In normal life classes, silent students sit in a silent room and draw a bored, oft-uninteresting model. In Dr. Sketchy’s we’ve got bodacious burlesque queens as models. We’ve got ridiculous art contests (best incorporation of a woodland animal? Best imagined costume?), good music and flashy prizes. We’ve got a selection of posh beverages- alcoholic and not- available to buy.

But, hold up. The models aren’t naked. Why aren’t the models naked, Dr. Sketchy?

New York city has an ordinance against naked girls and drinking in the same room.

Let this be a reminder to you kids to get out and vote. And if you don’t live in New York City, Molly invites you to start your own Dr. Sketchy’s. That’s the way she rolls.
