As part of our never ending, compulsive consumption of food, we are constantly scouring the city internet for the perfect places to, say, chase down a taco truck. But sometimes we get tired of tacos. Or we get issued restraining orders. Thankfully, Gridskipper has taken the time to map out the best places in Washington DC to go shove a hot pupusa in your mouth. What are pupusas, you ask? Christ, be patient. We’re about to tell you, cretin:
For those gringos not in the know, bienvenidos to the quintessential Central American comfort food: fried cornmeal patties stuffed with grilled-cheese goodness and piled high with curtido (pickled cabbage), then sprinkled with vinegary hot sauce. Yum! Pupusas also come stuffed with other things, like loroco, refried beans, rendered pork fat, or revueltas (which means “revolting” in Spanish), [Ed. note: Oh, does it? We thought “Noelia” meant revolting, but maybe we’re just out of practice.] but beginners should probably stick to con queso.
There is nothing that cannot be improved by a little bit of rendered pork fat. Pupusas, tacos, honeymoons. Anything.

Hey I’m Salvi and from DC. Pupusas in the nation’s capital aren’t NEWS. Some pupuseria’s have been here 25+ years. Most importantly, half the places on the list aren’t good. Try the pupusas at El Rinconcito in Columbia Heights, or any pupusa truck over some of their suggestions. Casa fiesta? please. Irene’s are gross and more Honduran than Salvi. Ercilia’s is decent, but this is by NO MEANS an extensive list. Dona Acuzena is good and has a number of locations through out the area, but the carne asada is their specialty I’d say. Ugh look at me hissy-fitting all over this entry…

@Lulu: You said it. But thanks for the lowdown. Anyone else know a better place to get your papoose on?

While here in Oakland Cali, taco trucks reign supreme on late nite gorging fests, there are many good pupuserias here as well (los cocos on fruitvale for one). But you cant beat the way they’re made back in E.S. or the 4 pupusas for a dollar deal. They don’t do that at El pollo campero!

revueltas means mixed. all the ingredients are mixed together and fried into goodness.
i’m salvi formerly from dc and I totally agree with lulu above. on sunday, the ladies in front of Shrine of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church sell a mean pupusa. mmm, grease….

I FREAKIN LOVE PUPUSAS w/ some good vinigear-y lemon-y curtido. Where could i get a good authentic one in NYC? And the person who said the Taco Truck on 30th Ave in Astoria need not apply. Thx!

I hear they make awesome pupusas out here on Long Island. But I don’t know anything beyond that.

For those of you in NY, I have not been there for a while but if you are in Brooklyn, Los Morros on 14th ave is alright. And in Long Island, Hempstead is like a little El Salvador.
