Hispanic Rapist In Arizona Might Not Be Hispanic

mexican11.09.07.jpg

An Arizona radio station, 1190AM, is protesting the official police description of a man known as the “Chandler Rapist,” which lists the man as “Hispanic, 28 to 40, 5-feet-6, muscular, with a mustache and black hair.” Mayra Nieves, VP of programming for New Radio Venture, which owns 1190AM, thinks the label “Hispanic” is misleading and amounts to racial profiling:

She said the man may look Hispanic, but may not be.
“It’s feeding more into the anti-Hispanic sentiment that everybody’s saying is not there, but is seen everywhere,” Nieves said “For me, saying he’s Hispanic because the victims are saying he’s Hispanic, is actually doing racial profiling.”

But he has a mustache!

She said police should provide a more accurate description, using the man’s skin color.
“By the fact that someone looks dark doesn’t mean that he’s Hispanic,” she said. “Even if he has an accent, as some people have said, it could be an Arab, it could be someone from mestizo descent. We don’t know. We don’t know if he’s Hispanic.”

Of course, many people in the community just want the dude caught, regardless of whether he’s Hispanic or “Hispanic-looking” or a robot from the moon.

Sigh. Official police sketch at top.
