I know how some of you are expecting a “Chavista” such as myself to react regarding the Chavez election, BUT you would be wrong… there CAN be too much of a good thing (have you ever had a fried Snickers?). [Ed. Note: This would imply that Hugo Chavez is a Snickers? We'd say he's more of one of those crappy cheap candies old ladies keep in the candy dish.] Bottom line is that we need to worry about our own “leader” who really IS a dictator and a murderer. To “re-quote” Kanye, “George Bush doesn’t care about brown people!” WORD [Ed: He said Black people, but okay.]

And a P.S. for all of you haters out there-don’t be acting like you wouldn’t kick it with Naomi Campbell yourself! [Ed: Tell that to her Chilean maid.]

And regarding the Most Embarrassing Latino Invitational, OK, so Jessica Alba won this round. … Of course she did! Ms. Alba (even her last name, show me a Puritan descendant with a name like that!) claims to be less Mexican than my half cracker self but is about 2 shades darker than me…The lady doth protest too much! [Ed. Note: Half cracker--explains so much.]

But I digress… back to Hugo, mi amor…What puzzles me most of all is the contempt that so many Latinos (in the US anyways) have for Chavez. Obviously a lot of it stems from Hugo’s connection to Fidel but then again, I don’t understand the extreme hatred for Castro either… Cubans have places to live, food to eat, education, and health care. Of course, there is not an abundance of anything and most Cubans live in very humble conditions BUT does that really matter? ALL Cubans have access to medical care. 45 MILLION AMERICANS can’t say the same thing! And some might say, well, all American children have access to public schools. Yes, that may be true but why is Cuba number FIVE in world literacy rates and the US is TWENTY-ONE?! I guess my point is this: we can’t have everything BUT if you ask me to choose between seeing a doctor when I’m sick or the option of opening a taco stand, I choose the doctor. [Ed: And you call yourself Brown and proud.] And since this is mainly about Castro, I’ll change up the obligatory “Viva” slogan today, VIVA CASTRO!!!

BTW, I’m a straight female but I never really got the Jessica Alba hype… um Salma anyone??? [Ed: The lady doth protest too much, methinks.]

Look I am no fan of the extreme right wing Cubans that populate the airwaves in Miami. With their rabid and shrill rhetoric filling (or brainwashing) people’s minds down there.

    HOWEVER.

Let’s get real. Castro may provide livable conditions in Cuba but they are of the most wretched variety. Don’t minimize the lack of food. There are shortages of everything in Cuba. People have a hard time accessing basic food stuffs on a regular basis. You can be an educated and get regular check ups but if you can’t access and utilize food properly then I assure you none of that other stuff matters in the long-term. Being educated and healthy makes many people realize that they need to get the hell out to a place where they can apply their education and good health.

Only the people who work in tourism make decent wage and have access to a higher standard of living. This pushes many to prostitution and other unscrupulous methods of getting $$$ from tourists. How can that seem like a good way for.

And let’s not get started on political freedoms. I could write several pages on the lack of free press, torture, jailing of dissedents, etc. I am not going to bother as I am sure you and others know the situation.

you know i’d like to meet Castro some day [if he is still alive] along with his power… he has some fuckin balls!! Not many people can get away with the things he does..
yeah his people might not have much freedom but at least he provide for them…
i dont know ..maybe i just wont understand until i’ve expirienced life under his rule.

If i do ever get to meet him …i’d bring him a nice suit because those fatigues NEED to go!

Ah, another person living in cushy capitalism and going on about how Cuba is “not so bad”. And how funny that every single time I meet one of these, they start spouting statistics about literacy and infant mortality. As if that were all that mattered. I’m sure there are many areas in which much of the world beats Cuba statistically. So….here’s another big choice for you: access to a doctor or freedom to speak your mind without your ass getting thrown in jail?

Let’s all get ready for the next round of statistics…

one: if anything, this post is an excellent example of the ideological divide that separates the liberals from the truly progressive.

two: to rebekah’s last point regarding the anti-castro/ chavez bias: it (the hating) comes with growing up in the U.S. and the consequent pro neo-liberalism/ free market/ anti socialism indoctrination. maybe if we (U.S. Latinos) began reading about all the US military interventions in Latinamerica (pinochet, anyone?), we’d be more readily see the grey areas between the media’s black/white political spins.

three: some words of advice…guanabee, while at times i can appreciate your humor and the cultural relevance of your content, your homogeneous reading/ spins to just about every political happening is making you near damn unreadable. props for posting rebekah’s note though. its alternative voice is appreciated.

    Truly progressive? Ha Ha Ha

You mean believing in things like these make you progressive.

    1) eternal reelection
    2) total control of the central bank
    3) governors picked by the executive
    4) total disregard of private property

Plus giving other countries $$$, without proper control, while in Caracas you can’t find milk.

Is that what you guys believe in? Laughable.

@fulanita- what good is “freedom to speak your mind without your ass getting thrown in jail” if you’re too sick to even do it? ALSO, “spouting statistics about literacy and infant mortality. As if that were all that mattered”; last time I checked, those things contribute to quality of life… not so important to you I guess…

Anti-Castro and anti-Chavez sentiment are so easily misconstrued for support of U.S. interventionism in Latin America. The U.S has certainly picked and chosen which dictatorships need to be toppled and alternately installed for the longest time. The question of motives is always at the forefront. It doesn’t help when people conflate words like fascism and dictatorship so that it’s nearly impossible to discuss the subject candidly. Perhaps some day we’ll be forced to “liberate” Venezuela just like we’ve done in a certain other nation.

Chavez, I can understand that it is too early to tell if he is a fascist and dictator. He doesn’t have a large or deep enough body of work to draw that conclusion quite yet, IMHO. But Castro is clearly a dictator is most, if not, all senses of the word.

No amount of education and health care makes up consistent lack of food. I am not going to debate the freedom issue because apparently some on the board don’t mind living under a repressive regime. But not being able to eat regularly (unless you are willing to hustle the system or become a tourist whore) is not a tenable situation.

thank you, I appreciate someone NOT insulting me or pointing out my grammatical errors or generally resorting to ugly words to respond to what I say. That said, what/who am I endorsing? And if you mean Venezuela and Cuba (I’m quite sure you are) than whatever do you mean by “endorse”? They are countries and cultures and people… since I consider myself a lover and admirer of the entire world then I guess you could say I “endorse” them… But I ain’t getting no deals in the process… I would endorse some bootleg Nikes in a hot minute, though!

    Peace!

Manolo, stop acting like a nerd, you KNOW what I meant… And how smart are you when you say I “endorse” certain countries when clearly you mean certain leaders? Be SPECIFIC! Aight then… Peace!
