thank you, I appreciate someone NOT insulting me or pointing out my grammatical errors or generally resorting to ugly words to respond to what I say. That said, what/who am I endorsing? And if you mean Venezuela and Cuba (I’m quite sure you are) than whatever do you mean by “endorse”? They are countries and cultures and people… since I consider myself a lover and admirer of the entire world then I guess you could say I “endorse” them… But I ain’t getting no deals in the process… I would endorse some bootleg Nikes in a hot minute, though!

I like Rebekah alot. I think she is often wrong but is, for sure, engaged in the process. I do hope she recognizes that her proclivity to free expression would not go over well in most places she endorses.

Chavez, I can understand that it is too early to tell if he is a fascist and dictator. He doesn’t have a large or deep enough body of work to draw that conclusion quite yet, IMHO. But Castro is clearly a dictator is most, if not, all senses of the word.

No amount of education and health care makes up consistent lack of food. I am not going to debate the freedom issue because apparently some on the board don’t mind living under a repressive regime. But not being able to eat regularly (unless you are willing to hustle the system or become a tourist whore) is not a tenable situation.

Anti-Castro and anti-Chavez sentiment are so easily misconstrued for support of U.S. interventionism in Latin America. The U.S has certainly picked and chosen which dictatorships need to be toppled and alternately installed for the longest time. The question of motives is always at the forefront. It doesn’t help when people conflate words like fascism and dictatorship so that it’s nearly impossible to discuss the subject candidly. Perhaps some day we’ll be forced to “liberate” Venezuela just like we’ve done in a certain other nation.

As if that were all that mattered”; last time I checked, those things contribute to quality of life… not so important to you I guess…

one: if anything, this post is an excellent example of the ideological divide that separates the liberals from the truly progressive.

two: to rebekah’s last point regarding the anti-castro/ chavez bias: it (the hating) comes with growing up in the U.S. and the consequent pro neo-liberalism/ free market/ anti socialism indoctrination. maybe if we (U.S. Latinos) began reading about all the US military interventions in Latinamerica (pinochet, anyone?), we’d be more readily see the grey areas between the media’s black/white political spins.

three: some words of advice…guanabee, while at times i can appreciate your humor and the cultural relevance of your content, your homogeneous reading/ spins to just about every political happening is making you near damn unreadable. props for posting rebekah’s note though. its alternative voice is appreciated.

And how funny that every single time I meet one of these, they start spouting statistics about literacy and infant mortality. As if that were all that mattered. I’m sure there are many areas in which much of the world beats Cuba statistically. So….here’s another big choice for you: access to a doctor or freedom to speak your mind without your ass getting thrown in jail?
