Latino and Black doormen like working in Brooklyn because they are expected to do less, says one kind of passively racist doorman:
Todd Chambers, 38, an African-American concierge and security guard at the Gretsch building who claims to have been the first doorman in Williamsburg, said there are more opportunities for African-American and Latino-American building workers in Brooklyn because residents are more mellow.
Including the couple below us who insist on playing “loud, funny game…. or troubling instances of domestic abuse?” in the wee hours of the morning. Also: There are doorman buildings in Williamsburg? Color us surprised:
“Brooklyn is more diverse, it’s more of a melting pot, and the tenants are more laid back,” Mr. Chambers said. “You have a few tenants with a Manhattan mentality because they came from Manhattan, but most of the time it’s more laid back … none of that starched-collar, standing-on-attention-at-the-door stuff. They talk to us like we’re bartenders, sometimes we’re their counselors.”
Yeah, forget that whole “doing your job” thing. Leave that kind of shit for Manhattan!
Not Your Manhattan Doorman! In Brooklyn, It’s ‘None of That Starched-Collar, Standing-on-Attention Stuff’ [The New York Observer]

What is this ‘Manhattan mentality’ that he speaks of? Also, what is this ‘Brooklyn’ that you speak of?
