Families comprised of both Guatemalan and Mexican immigrants are becoming more and more common in Phoenix. And, like with any pairing that is born on a dancefloor amidst the sweat-soaked gyrations of several dozen inebriated strangers, these begin with playful interpretations of the truth:
Santiago Chavez spotted Bibiana Arzeta at a Latin nightclub in Phoenix and asked her to dance.
Where are you from? Arzeta asked. Mexico, Chavez replied.
Chavez gave Arzeta his phone number, and later, the two began talking regularly. That’s when Arzeta, who is originally from Acapulco, noticed Chavez didn’t speak Spanish with an accent like hers.
Where are you really from? Arzeta asked. This time, Chavez told the truth. Guatemala.
Yeah, his accent was thick with lies. Arzeta was eventually able to forgive Chavez his Guatemalaness and the two eventually created a little… something:
The mixture has become so common in Phoenix, some community members have even coined a name “Guatemexicoestadounidenses,” or Guatemexiamericans, to describe the families.
Guatemexicoestadounidenses. It just trips off the tongue, doesn’t it? Like an old lady down a flight of stairs. Yeah, what Santi and Bibi had is called an “American.” Sorry.
Guatemalans, Mexicans blending as families [The Arizona Republic]

BIG WHOOP, this has been happening for numerous years in California where the years of immigration have been longer. And it is painful to read an article that not only labes these poor children as different, but for the site to be on the “joke” as well.

@ latinogamer: Where does it say, in the article or in this post, that these kids are a joke? The only thing painful about the article is the fact that the name ties your tongue in knots.

the article makes and jokes of their suppose ‘mix’ descent. All latinos blood come from a Spanish Viceroy y un puta india…well not all of us, but you get the point. So are Mexicans suppose to marry mexicans, and puerto ricans only with other ricans…wait there is more that one rican…the madness the madness of it all.
Also People from Cancun are probably have closer connections to the Guatemalan people because of region and similiar customs.
