A disproportionate number of Hispanics in Central Florida are being killed in car accidents as a result of not wearing safety belts. Probably because a life in Central Florida is not one worth living:
A lack of seat-belt-safety education, an absence of restraints and often a large number of occupants is a deadly combination for Hispanic drivers and passengers in Central Florida.
FHP crash reports show nearly three-quarters of the 25 unrestrained occupants who were thrown from their vehicles in Central Florida in November were Hispanic. Four died from their injuries.
It’s like Disney World, really.
Though November had an unusually high number of accidents in which drivers and passengers were ejected, the crashes highlight a deadly trend. In Central Florida last year, one-third of those killed in crashes where seat belts weren’t worn were Hispanic, even though they make up just 17 percent of the region’s population.
Is piling seventeen family members into a five-seater some uniquely Latino phenomenon? Seems like. Also, do people not realize how quickly seat belts can wrinkle a perfectly pressed guayabera? It’s a tragedy many are afraid to talk about.
