A study conducted in Tennessee shows more Latino drivers are stopped by the state’s highway patrol than any other group:
The study was ordered by the state Legislature in 2005 to find out whether race and ethnicity play a role which drivers get pulled over.
The comptroller’s office analyzed nearly 240,000 reports issued by the Highway Patrol in 2006.
THP Col. Mike Walker says troopers stop drivers for violations, not because of racial profiling. He says most troopers don’t know the ethnicity of the drivers until they are pulled over.
The study found one out of 19 white or black drivers were stopped, while the rate for Hispanic drivers dropped to one in 11.
What’s the Latino population of Tennessee, we wonder? And do they drive recklessly while talking on their fabulous Motorola Razr2 cell phones? Who knows!
