Kidnappings In Phoenix Bring A Little Bit Of Latin America To The U.S. Of A.

A recent slew of kindnappings in Phoenix, Arizona have left cops worried that Latino immigrants are bringing less-than-desirable traditions with them into the United States:

The abductions are occurring in the Phoenix area at the rate of practically one per day, and police suspect they have led to killings in which bound and bullet-riddled bodies have been found dumped in the desert.
The kidnap victims are typically drug- or immigrant-smugglers, who are seen as inviting targets because they have a lot of money, they can raise large sums of cash on short notice, and they are unlikely to go to the police, for fear their own shady dealings will come to light.
“We have never had a victim that we have investigated that has been as clean as the new driven snow,” said Sgt. Phil Roberts, who investigates the kidnappings. “There has always been some type of criminal element to it. Either they are criminals, drug dealers or human smugglers — or a close family member is.”

Escarytown. This is why we don’t smuggle drugs and our family works in noble, totally legal enterprises. Like waste management. Cough.

They’re always blaming our illegal heritage.

make the actual killers into some kind of border watchmen group, and Law & Order has a great twist at minute 36.

While I’m not about to dispute Diego’s implication of racism (bad stuff happening to brown people? They must be involved in some kind of criminal activity!) , kidnapping does strike me as being one of those crimes where it pays to target rich folks with poor access to retaliation. Legally rich white folks have huge resource pools (i.e., the FBI) for revenge when compared to those available to those (white or otherwise) who are wealthy from illegal means.

It’s also cause Phoenix is the most boring city on the planet. There is absolutely nothing interesting to do there - just the usual banal consumerist activities that pass as entertainment these days. It’s no wonder they’ve taken to more exciting pastimes.
