Marcelo Cunning And Amylu Meneses Blow Up (In A Newspaper They Hand Out For Free On The Subway)
10 January 2008, 12:45 PM. By Daniel Mauser

How did we miss our good friends at Latino hipster party Nacotheque getting a big, fat feature spread all over free, daily newspaper AM New York? Oh yeah, no one reads that paper! But we are full of pride nonetheless. Latin alterna-pride:
“We started [Nacotheque] to fill a musical void,” says Mexico-born, California-raised Cunning. “Mainstream Spanish pop is thoroughly commercial. As DJs, we knew there were cool Spanish-language bands doing original stuff in genres ranging from indie rock to baile-funk to electropop. We wanted to give them a voice in welcoming, unpretentious surroundings. So we chose the Mexican slang word ‘naco,’ which hipsters use exactly like ‘bro.’”
So if we use it to mean ‘idiot,’ we’re probably not hipsters, right? (Phew.) Also in the story: celeb namedropping. Did you know that Elijah Wood and Gael Garcia Bernal have both made Nacotheque, “their own party”? Two hobbits, one camino. Congrats, Marcelo and Amylu!

You lost me at “Mainstream spanish pop is throughly commercial”
i read AM! and so do all my amigos. i read this this morning. good for them.
Actually, “naco” means anything but bro, it’s used to refer the lowest step in the social ladder, it’s a lot closer to the term ” white trash ” it just doesn’t refer to any race at all, nacos are multiracial. Try this link if you wanna see what i mean.
My bad, THIS LINK sorry for double posting
Que nacos!
If you’ve ever been on a subway, you’d know that EVERYONE reads AMNY :-P
Do hipsters use the word “bro?”
yeah my aunt who married a mexican uses naco in a very derogitory way. like naco = low class/ghetto/trash
