South Texans Hire Big City Lawyers To Stop Border Wall. U.S. Government Sure To Ignore Them, Too.
8 January 2008, 9:45 AM. By Daniel Mauser
Citizens of South Texas are still fighting the good fight against the proposed border wall (the U.S. government calls it a “fence.” Like the Berlin Fence!) by employing some big city lawyers to help them out. An informational meeting was held Monday in Brownsville, Texas reports the Austin American-Statesman:
[Peter Schey with the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law in Los Angeles], said language in an omnibus spending bill approved by Congress in late December and signed by President Bush not only mandates public consultation about the fence but also gives the federal government discretion in determining the best means to gain control of the border. It also says alternative infrastructure can be considered.
The Department of Homeland Security wants to erect 70 miles of intermittent, double-layered fencing in the Rio Grande Valley, where considerable riverfront land is privately owned — much of it by ranchers, descendants of indigenous people or inheritors of Spanish land grants handed down hundreds of years ago. There, the fence plan has encountered vehement criticism. Many landowners, business and environmental interests, and elected officials have complained that the government made its plans with little feedback from residents.
That’s usually the case when these sorts of structures go up, no?

Lol@the Nazi soldier
I would like to meet the person who thought up the idea of a Berlin wall for the Mexico/US border… and smack him on the side of his head.
If this ‘fence’ is contructed History is going repeat itself.
The Rio Grande River is between Mexico and Texas for over 1,250 miles. This absurd “fence” is starting with 70 miles but we can all see where those assholes are trying to go with it.
And what about the term “wetback?” If that wall goes up, who will be given the job to come up with something equally offensive? Oh, right. Jessica Alba.
Most folks in Texas really do think it’s as idiotic as any sensible person elsewhere does. It’s just going to destroy the beauty of the Rio Grande country and not stop anything. They should listen to the locals on this - they will be the ones that know best how things work in their region. Idiots in Washington…
The meeting in Brownsville is not associated with the Center for Human Rights. The Center is representing a few landowners who claim to have indigenous rights. Texas RioGrande Legal Aid hosted the meeting on Monday and is working with all the other landowners. TRLA is providing its services for free.
