The Straight Pope: El Papa Hopes To Smooth Things Over With Muslims, Still Being A Benedict To The Gays

Pope Benedict XVI was in the news this weekend for saying anti-gay thingamabobs during the homily of his annual New Year’s Day mass at the Vatican:

Pope Benedict ushered in the New Year on Tuesday by criticising policies that undermine the traditional family, saying they eroded one of the most important foundations for peace in the world.

Because, you know, Hitler was raised by two dads. Also, Pope Benedict knows all about keeping peace. Like he’s never, for example, pissed off 2 billion Muslims with insensitive rhetoric or anything:

Benedict angered Muslims with a speech on faith and reason in September 2006 in Germany in which he cited a Medieval text that characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as “evil and inhuman,” particularly “his command to spread by the sword the faith.”

Oh.

Catholic and Muslim representatives plan to meet in Rome in the spring to start a “historic” dialogue between the faiths after relations were soured by Pope Benedict XVI’s 2006 comments about Islam and holy war, Vatican officials said.

Well, good thing there are no gay Muslims.

What a bunch of blabbering. First of all, what the heck do you expect the leader of the Roman Catholic Church to do? Say that gay sex is okay and everyone should try it? What nonsense. Of course homosexuality threatens the family, with gay people even wanting to redefine basic cultural foundations such as marriage.

Also, have you even taken time to read the Pope’s Regensburg speech, the one that “angered Muslims”? Apparently not. If you had, you’d know that it’s an amazing speech that doesn’t at all insult Muslims. Extremist Muslims jumped on any opportunity they could to cry foul, as they always do. But if you read it carefully, it even praised what is best in Islam, calling them to live up to their nonviolent tradition as expounded in their own holy book. Nowhere did the Pope endorse the emperor’s comments, even though there is much truth even to what the emperor had to say.

    Please think before you post.

I’ll definitely try to wrap my head around how gay marriage threatens the family James, you’re right. You’re not a flaming idiot at all. Actually, I hear it also killed the dinosaurs. True story.

Anyway, I think the ad here for “Single Muslims” is the coolest thing since jdate.

@James: You’re right, homos truly threaten the ever so sacred sacrament of marriage. Mortgage payments, domestic violence and adultery killed my parents’ marriage. They’re so not cool….I guess they didn’t get the Homo memo. Losers.

Okay, not to beat a dead horse (but what the hell, I’m gonna do it anyway), but marriage as a cultural foundation, James? Please. Weak. Unless you mean that an american cultural value is divorce, which, although I would not disagree with, I doubt is what your pope-heartin’ ass is trying to say.

However, if I have misinterpreted you, please feel free to repost with a thorough essay defending the family values presented by the sanctimonious marriage of, for example, (might as well beat TWO dead horses) Britney and K-Fed.

Dumb Comment… let’s all refocus our attention to a young Pope Benedict and his “Nazi” past, how provocative of you! Cheap and unnecessary shot…
    And dare I say it?
    Yes, I do, you’re a MORON!
