No Country For American Actors: Foreign Stars Reign At The Oscars

oscar.euros.2.25.08.jpg

Last night, on America’s most important election night, it was interesting to note that not one American actor took home an award.

Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis
Best Actress: Marion Cotillard
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem
Best Supporting Actress: Tilda Swinton

Even the statue for Best Animated Feature went to a French rat. And, of course, Javier Bardem won again making him the first Spanish actor to win an Academy Award. Admittedly, his acceptance speech in which he addressed his mother, Spanish actress Pilar Bardem who was in the audience, was kind of awww:

Mama, this is for you. This is for your grandparents and your parents, Rafael and Matilde, This is for the comedians of Spain who like you have brought dignity and pride to our profession. This is for Spain and this is for all of you.

He said it in Spanish, though. Which was, like, so hot.

Did he thay it like thith?

@ Diego: Yeth, of courth.

Thith justh provth thath theth dollar is deadth.

I am loving all the not-so-thinly-veiled xenophobia extended to the non-American actors with TEH ACCENTS. I mean, even James McEvoy, who is, like, Scottish, was mocked for his accent in the red carpet, and Ryan Seacrest even made Marion Cotillard say something in an American accent. Seriously, they are not American, we get it. It is not some moral failure for which they have to atone. And this is the only “article” I’ve read that actually provides a translation of Bardem’s comment. Everyone else is, like, oh he said something foreign! In another language! How exotic! Blagh.

@ este es mi nombre……Wah Wah

And since when has “xenophobia” become a pre-req for anything posted on this site? New word to replace the one that apparently everyone just learned: Redundant

jrod: i don’t know if you are referring to my comment, but I was not referring to this site but to the Oscar coverage on the newspapers/blogs I checked out this morning. Just saying.

Kinda…but not really. Your comment just reminded me that I’ve seen the word way too much as of recently….I just realized that it’s been bothering me…not much unlike the thing that sort of looks like a hickie on my neck this morning…..loooooong night!

Yeah, well, you hear the word so much these days because xenophobia runs rampant right now…

I don’t know if it’s xenophobia so much as vacant interest in anything foreign because you know it’s what’s so hot and in right now

Excuse me while I lean over the toilet and vomit

Thank You Life Thank You Love…..that was so cool…

Oh, the hypocrisy of Guanabee readers is too much. You guys are killing me here. Este_es_mi_nombre bitches about how foreigners are being mocked by entertainment/media types and bloggers, but right before his or her comment, two Guanabee readers did the exact same thing: they mocked Javier Bardem.

Also, xenophobia has always existed. It exists everywhere (even in Latin America). Americans didn’t invent it. It’s actually worse in some Asian countries. And don’t feel bad for James McEvoy. He’s from the UK, and he probably thinks he’s superior to Americans of every race and ethnicity.

Who cares if they are European? Heck, even the Best Original Song went to Europeans.

If you saw any of those movies, especially Once, There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men, then you know their awards were well deserved.

so how the hell did Viggo lose

@este: i think it’s xavierophobia. if you listen to regis philbin, of course
