A informational brochure entitled “¡Hazte Cargo de tu Salud!”, distributed by the Weight-control Information Network (WIN) hopes to excitedly yell various health and diet tips in the general direction of fat, Hispanic teens:

“WIN’s goal is to provide Hispanic teens and their families with current and research-based information that will not only help them make better decisions about what they eat but will also encourage them to get active,” said Leslie Curtis, M.A., Director of WIN. “It is an important step that may help improve health among Spanish-speaking teens and their families.”

¡Hazte Cargo de tu Salud! provides information about healthy eating and physical activity. The Spanish-language brochure offers practical tools that teens can use in their everyday life, from reading food labels and selecting how much and what foods to eat, to replacing TV time with physical activity.

First off, we take great issue with the complete and utter disregard for the “C” in “Weight-control Information Network,” for the sole purpose of creating a cheese-laden acronym. Also, while we disengeniously commend WIN for creating this brochure, we’re not sure a pamphlet is going to make eating a heaping plate of arroz con pollo y lots of mayonnaise in the bathtub while watching “Dynasty” any less appealing. Oh, we kid! But, really, we doubt a brochure will suddenly get teens to embrace healthier lifestyles, especially if their parents eat unhealthfully and lead sedentary lives as well.

What do you think, though? Is there power in information? Or would you rather be bullied and shamed into losing weight, à l’Anna Wintour-method (AW)?
