Aunt Jemima Salmonella Recall Will Kill Your Appetite
5 March 2008, 12:15 PM. By Daniel Mauser
Quaker Oats Co., the company with the quietly menacing mascot in a three-cornered hat, is recalling its Aunt Jemima Pancake & Waffle Mixes in original, original complete and buttermilk complete because of a possible risk of salmonella:
The company said the products are sold in 2-pound and 5-pound boxes with best before dates of Feb. 8, 2009 through Feb. 16, 2009. No other Aunt Jemima, frozen Aunt Jemima or Quaker products are affected.
Quaker said it is recovering the product involved and said most products haven’t yet been placed on store shelves. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this issue to date.
In fact, Hispanics spend 2.8 times more on pancake mix as do non-Hispanics according to the book: “Marketing to American Latinos: A Guide to the In-Culture Approach.” The author, M. Isabel Valdes attributes Latinos affinity to pancake mix to their low price,$1.89 a box baby! And their symbolism of strong family values and motherly care.
So, share. Did you grow up eating pancakes and chocolate milk and cornflakes with condensed milk for breakfast? Of course you did. And, yet, somehow we manage to grow up weighing something less than 500 pounds. Latinos. How do we do it?
