Our Lady of Guadalupe School in Bakersfield, California has cancelled a scheduled talk by pro-abortion activist Dolores Huerta once they figured out that her opinions are kind of not totally in line with Catholic doctrine. The speech she intended to give, however, was on her role as a founder of the United Farm Workers of America and not as Dolores Huerta, Lady Ok With Abortion:

Students at the Catholic elementary school issued Huerta an invitation to speak after learning that she was the co-founder of the United Farm Workers of America.

However, the school revoked the invitation because of her pro-abortion views. According to the California Catholic Daily, parents called to complain about the invite.

Parent Steve Loftus said his son was asked to write an assignment about Huerta after a teacher praised her. He wrote a strongly-worded letter to complain but never received a response from school officials.

“I’m paying for a Catholic education and that’s what I expect to get,” he said. “They should be teaching our children to be members of the Church Militant.”

While we think a Catholic school has a right to disagree, or even condemn, Huerta for her views, we don’t think it’s reasonable or beneficial to deny students a learning experience simply because the person doing the teaching happens to have views — views that are wholly irrelevant to the topic they were brought in to discuss, by the way — that conflict with or oppose the position of the Catholic Church.

But what do you Guanababies think? Was Our Lady of Guadalupe right in dismissing Our Lady Who Opposed Proposition 85, or should she have been allowed to talk without fear of turning school children into pre-marital-sex-having, baby-aborting fiends?

“The Church Militant”? Did I read that correctly? OMG!!! And everyone who sets foot inside a Catholic institution, event an important living historical figure relevant to the congregation/students of said institution, has to echo the Vatican’s position on this issue? And how predictable that the one voice of outrage among the students was a dude, and a non- Latino at that.

The school has all the right in the world to rescind Ms. Huerta’s invitation, for any reason, really. But it certainly doesn’t make them look good at all…

I went to Catholic school and those nuns practically asked for a stool sample before letting anyone talk to us. If the school knew of Huerta’s views on abortion beforehand, they should have expected some outrage once word got out.

If the topic of the lesson was the pro-life stance, then obviously Huerta would be the wrong choice of speaker. That’s like asking JLo to teach the kids on American Idol. But the topic of the lesson was the United Farm Workers of America. What do Huerta’s views of abortion have to do with that?

And besides, I wonder how many of the staff and parents, Steve Loftus included, is totally in line with Catholic doctrine. I doubt they all are.

It is a lose-lose situation. Children will not be exposed to strong women in the “Rights” Movement and the latinos/chicanos/hispanics will not be exposed to a strong, smart, latino woman.

Maybe they can invite Rigoberta Manchu next week…

I don’t think the Catholic church is really in it to expose children, or anyone for that matter, to any new and progressive ways of thinking. I still think it’s their right to promote whatever views are in line with the Church.

“Church Militant”? Wtf is that? Is it a Catholic thing? I was raised loosely in a Methodist setting, so I have no idea. Sounds a bit creepy, like the stuff those Jesus Camp kids do…

@ peeps: “Church Militant” is a term used to describe all living Christians (not necessarily Catholics), with “Church Triumphant” describing deceased Christians. It’s not a phrase I ever remember learning in school, and I went to an all girls’ Catholic school from ages 4 to 18. This might be because the term sounds… slightly terrifying and… weaponish.

If they want an appropriate speaker..maybe they can ask one of the perverted priests and bishops in so cal to come in and splain why we need donations to pay legal fees for child molesters…!
