Not content to let governors in New York hog the media spotlight, Puerto Rican governor Anibal Acevedo got gotten into some custom-fit troubles of his own. He is currently facing allegations of campaign finance violations, conspiracy, wire fraud and tax evasion after receiving lots amount of cash funneled through Philadelphia. The news is not entirely to many close to Acevedo who noticed his switch from off-the-rack suits to designer brands. But how could a suit purchased in such a bad way feel this good?
Among the stunning allegations in the 27-count indictment are:
- Acevedo Vila received $57,000 in “high-end personal clothing” from “exclusive clothing stores” in 2003 and 2004 - clothes that were paid for by private executives connected to his campaign. At the time, Acevedo Vila was earning less than $15,000 as Puerto Rico’s resident commissioner in Washington.
- A campaign aide to Acevedo, Luisa Inclan Bird, who was also indicted, arranged for private individuals to supplement Vila’s salary by soliciting periodic personal contributions from $500 to $5,000.
- Private companies, acting at Inclan Bird’s behest, paid for Acevedo’s American Express bills, family vacations to Florida and Costa Rica and his children’s trip to China.
- Acevedo’s aides also arranged for Puerto Rico business executives to secretly pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in bogus invoices to pay off debts from a previous race.
The lesson here for aspiring governors is, as we see it, two-fold: 1) Pay for sex in cash, upfront and in person and 2) Men’s Wearhouse guarantees it. Why shop anywhere else?

Wait. There are no sex charges listed on the 27-count indictment? Bummer. I was hoping for the McGreevey, Spitzer, Acevedo trifecta!
