Is It Weird That Harold And Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay Was The Most Anticipated Film At SXSW?

According to our pals at Jaman, who are in Austin right now for the nerdo portion of the SXSW festival, the world premiere of Harold And Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay opened to sell-out crowds this past weekend and was the talk of the town everywhere they went. Is this the sign of a decline in Western civilization? Are there larger political themes explored in the film? Is everyone, as Mr. Hand from Fast Times At Ridgemont High postulated, on dope? Probably, maybe. The low down on the film and the trailer after the jump.
The movie, which can best be described as an American Road trip through the backwoods of the South played up racial stereotypes, questioned political and social views and carefully balanced drug use and sex (yes, together). The duo tested friendship, found love and ended up in some very sticky situations with bags of narcotics as they traveled from Amsterdam to Cuba to Miami to Texas and back to Amsterdam.
Harold and Kumar have sex together???!!! Hot damn. We must admit we’ve had a bit of a crush on Kal Penn (Kumar) since he appeared in The Namesake. And then of course there’s Neil Patrick Harris as “the womanizer.” Bwa ha ha.

40 years ago it would have been Antonioni, today it’s Harold and Kumar. Are we on dope? Yes.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved White Castle, but is this the best SXSW can do?
