Meet Thomas Beatie. He was born biologically female, had sex reassignment surgery, and is now legally male. When his wife, Nancy, was unable to have children, Thomas, who still has female genitalia, decided he’d carry their baby himself. And thus became the world’s first pregnant man. A process which, unsurprisingly, hasn’t been too easy:
Our situation sparks legal, political, and social unknowns. We have only begun experiencing opposition from people who are upset by our situation. Doctors have discriminated against us, turning us away due to their religious beliefs. Health care professionals have refused to call me by a male pronoun or recognize Nancy as my wife. Receptionists have laughed at us. Friends and family have been unsupportive; most of Nancy’s family doesn’t even know I’m transgender.
And we thought nothing could shock our parents more than the news we’re dating a Protestant. Beatie’s first attempt at pregnancy was ectopic, but his second try was successful. Now five months pregnant, Thomas hopes his story will help foster dialogue about the nature of family and our bodies:
How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am. In a technical sense I see myself as my own surrogate, though my gender identity as male is constant. To Nancy, I am her husband carrying our child—I am so lucky to have such a loving, supportive wife. I will be my daughter’s father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family.
Seahorses are all, like, “Whatever.” When we first heard about this story, we immediately thought about those men who announce “We’re pregnant!,” because they can completely empathize with carrying around an extra several dozen pounds, sore nipples, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, swollen ankles and stretch marks for the better part of a year, resulting in pushing out a squirming, helpless creature that will bite on your nipples, keep you up at night and eventually grow to hate you. People need an anatomy lesson. I’ve seen versions of this story that say this guy still has female genitalia and still has a vagina, implying that this is the only reason he was able to be pregnant. Last time I checked, a baby is gestated in an organ called a uterus, or womb, as the old schoolers call it. I know the vatgina leads to the uterus, but a child grows in the uterus. So the dude still has a uterus, as opposed to other transsexuals who have hysterectomies upon gender reassignment. I really don’t care if my comment is irksome. I’m tired of intellectual laziness…

I think one of the messages in this story is that the fact that Mr. Beatie still has a uterus isn’t what’s defining his gender.
I think its awesome. I find it amazing and fascinating that people are willing to do so much (even to blur the line of gender identity) for the sake of love. Mr.Beatie is to be commended.

The article claims that he will be the “first pregnant man.” To make such an assertion robs other transmen of their experiences… in fact, many FTM’s have given birth to children, some publicly and some privately. An almost Universal commonality has been the discrimination they have encountered from “service providers.” One can only hope that more and more trans people feel liberated to create their families in the ways we are able… as doctors see that our children are as likely to be happy and healthy as any child born into and raised in a “traditional” household is, they will come to realize that love truly does make a family.
What I do think is great has been the way the stories about THIS pregnant man have been written. No one has called his identity into question, which gives me hope for further positive media portrayals of trans people as diverse, complicated people… just like everyone else!

It’s not a man. This isn’t the world’s first Male Pregnancy. It’s confusing at best for everyone. I’m not trying to deny anyone’s right to call themself what they want, but let’s be accurate when reporting. Men don’t have a uterus.
I’m male. I have XY chromosomes and lack both a vagina and a uterus. To say this is the first “Male Pregnancy” is disingenuous at best.
I fully support the individuals in question and their pursuit of happiness, as I hope they would do for me. However, until a person with testicles and not ovaries carries a child inside them, it’s not a “male being pregnant”. Indeed, possessing XX chromosomes but declaring to the world a male identity is definitely a boundary-breaking endeavor in today’s world. Having XX chromosomes and bearing a live child is not.
I wish the best for the family, I’m just disappointed in how this story is written. I was sucked in by the headline which promises “XY chromosome person carries baby”, but doesn’t deliver because that’s not what’s happening. This article is about the place of gender identity in society, but drops the ball.

It really is more about the difficulties of not fitting into traditional societal gender roles and the ignorant reaction of so many at all levels…especially human services/health workers…making us even more ashamed of our healthcare system…

After reading this story, you can’t deny the issues such as discrimination, arguments of gender definition, and even those claiming to be the “first” like it’s some P*r*z Hilton post.
But to me, I can’t help but see this as a tremendous love story. Two people wanting to love and care for a child is admirable and beautiful. Best wishes to them!

I’m confused. The article says this woman had sex reassignment surgery. With female genitals and a womb–what surgery took place? Also, what chromosomes does this person have? There are many variations and not all people are genetically distinctly either male or female and their genitals vary. Since she wasn’t born male then this article can’t really call her male. She/he might have truly been born genetically ambiguous in which case a pregnancy would make for interesting reading indeed. That would be unique, but a person who is genetically and physically clearly female, though calling themselves male and having a baby is not unique or all that impressive. It’s another aberration in our corrupt society.

Though technically he isnt a male im really curious on how someone has sexual reassignment surgery and keeps the vagina? thats just odd..does it make him a hermaphrodite? anywho blessings to Mr.Beatie and his wife and little girl. As to the questions about surgery. As Thomas stated, he opted to have “top surgery” (removal of breast tissue or chest reconstruction surgery) and not “bottom surgery” (removal of internal genitalia and/or external genitalia reconstruction).
I figured I would answer the question as, I am guessing, the parents may be busy with a pregnancy on their hands. :)

Amazing story. Congratulations. I am a male and think that it would be amazing to experience this. If sex was not a requirement I’m sure that a lot of men would choose to carry at least one of their children.
So. Its a woman that wanted to be a man having a baby? That’s not amazing to me. I could see if this was a real man. But its not. Its a confused woman. So..really..its just a woman that looks like a man having a baby.

If the child is wanted, loved, what difference does it make which car he or she travelled in to get here?
A missed point not mentioned in the discrimination aspect point of view.
I work in the Healthcare Information Technology. Medicaid claims were one of the systems. In these claims systems, there are several gender specific procedures. I.e. a doctor submitting a prostate exam for a woman would be a claim automatically rejected.
So is this couple being discriminated against or is the medical community just pursuing the path that they will get paid for.
As far as biology goes, the man is not a man. He’s a woman taking male hormones. He’s still XX. He’s still has a larger verbal path between the two brain hemisphere for more verbal conversation. He grew up as a girl. He probably never got in a fist fight and made friends with his enemy 5 minutes later. And, as girl, I sure there was days when she heard “I won’t play with you no more.” You know the typical head games girls play amongst each other. But, I could care less either way. Most FTM can successfully appear as a man.
The surgery was probably just the removal of the breasts. Lower half surgery for FTM is expensive. Moreover, they can’t create a functional penis. And there exist the possibility of loosing sexual functioning (pleasure) converting the females parts to look like male parts.
Thomas Beatie is gender hybrid, the way i see it. With the exception of what’s in his pants, his appearance (and demeanor, I’m sure) say Male. He even has a piece of paper confirming his male-ness, and i don’t begrudge him that at all.
What’s inside his pants (and body) state otherwise. He has a vagina, a uterus and is carrying a child. That makes part of him a woman.
I agree that claiming he’s the first man to have a baby is a stretch. Had he been born XY and managed to get pregnant, i would be the first to get in line to congratulate him - give the men a chance to carry the child for a change.
My question is, did these articles come up because of the descrimination or vice versa?
I read on a popular link site that when they were contacted about the vaildity of their claims, the wife said they couldn’t talk about it, but to check back in a week or so.

This handsome woman is still a woman. She has two X chromosomes and all of the other thousands of genetic and biological traits to prove that fact. She just has a glob of skin and nerves grafted to the front of her pubis, which essentially just lets her orgasm a little differently; plus the thousands of milligrams of testosterone pills she probably has to take. I’ve been lucky that most of the people I’ve know throughout my life have been accepting of me. I’m able to say that I have experienced the whole gamut of ‘maleness’. I played jv football, I took boxing, I went out with the dudes to strip clubs and now I’m going to start mixed martial arts training here in Brazil. So yeah I still have a vagina (which I hate to acknowledge and will not be missed) but thats changing as soon as I can come up with $150,000. I didnt do this to confuse people. I didnt start down this road because I’m confused. I knew that it would be hard. I knew that there would be opposition. I did this so I can live my life in accord to my belief of who I am inside. I did this because all I ever wanted to do was live life to its fullest and enjoy it.
Playing sports and taking part in activities that are normally for men doesn’t make you a male being. You are confused. He is NOT the world’s first pregnant man. There have been a number of transmen who have been pregnant and gave birth. One example is Matt Rice the former partner of Patrick Califia who gave birth to their son a number of years ago.
This person was actually born a woman and kept her female organs during gender reassignment. This person is only legally defined as male, Not physically, nor medically. There is a huge difference.

I remember reading in Discover or some other similar mag that the womb is quite adaptable and agressive, and there were other instances where a male had a womb transplanted to him and it quickly adapted developing connections for the blood and etc. If this were possible this would totally reshape the discussion of lesbian and gay couples and the issue about womens/mens natal health and abortion (ya just know that discussion would change drastically since men would know what pregnancy is like).

She’s not a man. If the story were about a man who was born a man and who then got miraculously pregnant, then you can say a man got pregnant. This story is interesting but not really because of the people involved, because as it was stated this has happened before in less reported cases. It is interesting in what it unearths in all of us. I felt so resolute in how I felt as I’m sure many people did when the posted comments. How strange it is to read though what others are feeling. This story obviously displays a strong societal misunderstanding of transgenders and why they make the changes they make. More than that though it unearths fear in truly evaluating gender identity in our culture and fear of gay families. And possibly the greatest fear, that science is allowing things to happen that we don’t like and that we can’t control. Remember how people originally felt about the concept of a surrogate to begin with?
No problem with their genders, etc. I commend their courage and strength to go for what they want and believe. That is why this is a free country.

Well, lets first start out that I am naturally female and heterosexual who is married and has several gay/lesbian familial relations, in fact one of my best friends is gay. Not only is one of my best friends gay but he was also raised by a same sex couple and I have often heard of how hard it has been for him growing up with his mother being in a same sex relationship- from society’s view that is. But feel that if you change your sex from the sex you were born with, you should stick to the new role of the sex you chose. Sociologically speaking, having a child and thus taking on a female role after becoming legally a male, is too much of a strain on the roles of one’s master or achieved status- either you are male or your not. Think of how the child will feel, when he or she is confronted with society learning of it’s conception- and lets be honest not many people are going to not have a bit of trouble understanding his or her familial situation. Its hard enough being raised by a same sex couple, but imagine trying to tell the child “No, honey, mommy didnt have you, your daddy did.” Think about it.
I don’t have a problem with the idea that he is giving birth, I do however have a difficult time understanding how he is legally a male while still having female genetalia. If a male had brest implants but kept his penis, whould that make him legally female? I don’t see how lack of breasts and facial hair make a woman a man. To me it is about the genetalia.
Weather or not you believe in God, there is no denying that this “person” was born with all the anatomy of a “woman”. Yet she feels more comfortable being a man. It is not for us to judge what she/he is, but considering she/he was born with all the mechanics to carry a child (unlike born male members), I do not consider this the first “man” or “male” to have a child. I don’t even think her/his ID/License should say male until the whole process was finished. I do think it is great that she/he is going to give birth for her/his life partner. Let’s get real people this is “NOT” the 1st “man” to give birth to a child. That has yet to happen.

These people need to think about the childs future. This is in the news this child will hear about this when it gets older. Kids can be mean and tough on other children. 2.) To all those people who have to insult Thomas and his family, GET OVER IT!! This is the new millenium, not the 1800’s!! We are who we are, INSIDE, doesn’t matter what we look like on the outside! I think doctors not wanting to treat him is wrong, and against the code, or should be anyway. Thats like police refusing to arrest someone due to religious beliefs. Yet that person could kill thousands of people, just because the police refused to arrest him. Who are YOU, or THEY to what is right and what is wrong? What makes “God” right? Just because “Jesus Christ” “supposedly” died for OUR sins, doesn’t that take away OUR responsibility for our wrongs? Thomas is taking responsibility in the only way he knows how, for his situation. His choice. No one else’s. His life. This isn’t a MAN having a child, it’s a woman. She may LOOK like a man but she has ovaries and an uterus. That he is without breast and has facial hair… Well I am sorry, but I know some women that (unfortunately) have facial hair and they are not male in any way. After reading several of these comments, I think it is important to note sevaral things.
First of all, just because a person is born with certain biological features, doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with their gender.
Words like “he” and “she” are words that denote gender, not sex. Similarly, words such as “man” and “woman” also denote gender
In this way, Thomas is obviously a man, and should be referred to with male pronouns, because these words are in line with his gender identity. It is a matter of respect to refer to him as such. There is absolutely no reason why using a certain pronoun necessarily implies anything about a person’s biology.
With this in mind, the title of this article “Meet Thomas Beatie. He’s pregnant” doesn’t imply anything about his chromosomes, or his reproductive organs. It simply and clearly states that it will be an interesting article about a pregnant man (again, a word referencing gender, not sex).
So the arguments claiming that this article is a “lie” because Thomas doesn’t have what are considered, in western society, to be male characteristics (testicles and xy chromosomes) are flawed because the article explains very clearly that Beatie is a man that was assigned female at birth, and is legally considered male. Legal definitions of sex are different from other definitions of sex, and, since they differ from place to place, shine light on the fact that not only is gender socially constructed and dependent on definitions defined by culture, society, and historical context, but sex is as well.
Think about it this way, sex could be defined by chromosomes, reproductive organs (which could be subcategorized, since not everyone has what are considered to be consistent reprodcutive biology), physical characteristics, or, really, almost any other factor.
In this way, sex is actually an idea that isn’t as set in stone as many people believe.
Ultimately, then, I would argue that gender matters not so that we can divide, separate, and categorize, but because there is a huge diversity of gender expression and identity, and it is important to affirm these identities. Because of this, also, saying that a transgender person should act in a way in correspondence with their gender identity is ridiculous.
This promotes the also inaccurate idea of a gender binary; that there are only two sexes and two genders that correspond neatly with one another. No person fits into these normative constructions because they defy physical biological facts of the diversity of human bodies, as well as the fact that human gender expression is as varied as there are humans.
Obviously Beatie is acting in a way in correspondence with his identity as a man. Why can’t a man be both a father and be pregnant? Pregnancy, although in most cases, is carried out by women who identify as such, but this is not always the case, and we should be open to the fact that some men undergo this experience as well.
Additionally, calling Beatie by pronouns associated with women is not only offensive to Beatie, but disrespectful to women’s identities because such an argument essentializes the experience of womanhood by implying that women are no more than the fact that they were born with certain biological criteria.
These comments are meant to be read with an open mind, and possibly slowly because it’s not easy for some people to get past the limited idea of a gender binary.
Once you do, however, you’ll notice how freeing it is for everyone of all genders because gender expression need not be so restricted.
Additionally, claims that this child will be in any way psychologically damaged up need to be challenged.
Children that are raised with love are better off than children that are raised without it.
Love is important not only directed to that child, but living in an environment that hates groups of people (transgender people, gay and lesbian, people, etcetara) is also stagnating to a developing person.
I would argue that this child will be well cared for and, yes, loved by their parents, and, because of the struggles they have overcome, will raise that child with a lot of insight. I don’t believe that being transgender is a stuggle in and of itself, but because of social issues, as evidenced in the ideology of some of the comments in this thread, that transgender people face, overcoming struggles are always associated with it.

Perhaps someone has said this already, but I think an important distinction should be drawn between biological sex and socially constructed gender. I think article does, though implicitly. Some people posting do not draw this distinction and in so doing, deny Thomas the space to construct his own gender. I hope that our ideas of both biologically constructed sex and socially constructed gender can continue to widen, allowing for great diversity and individuality.

After watching Thomas and Nancy (as well as their family and friends) on Oprah, I am completely excited for their journey. As a bisexual woman, I have dated men and women for decades. Currently, I am married to my BFF, who happens to be a male, and can’t wait to try to have children. However, if my BFF had been a woman, we would be discussing the same situation Thomas and Nancy did; who will have the kids? I find it more difficult to remain devoted and loving when all odds are against you, so my advice is CONGRATULATIONS! To Thomas and Nancy. Thanks for sharing your story. The less “fantastical” it becomes, the better for all non-traditional families out there. I can’t wait to meet the “girl borne of a man”. Keep us posted :)
What about just being happy with who you are and how you were born? Except for those who are born with some kind of disease, disfiguration etc… It’s mutilating the body what bothers me. Future Frankenstein’s because of the operations gone wild and wrong. There are sooo many unhappy people because of their images. Sometimes they make it worse. The doctors are the ones having the most fun with all of the cash coming through. The media love these stories. Even the people who do piercing and tattoos etc… Hey, don’t get me wrong, I would like one or two tribal tattoos, I love art. Here’s the thing, how much is too much when you can’t even recognize the person, your son, your own daughter, parents etc… Do we love our selves less each day? It’s interesting to hear that Thomas Beatie did not feel that she was a boy trapped in a girls body. It’s interesting to know that she was first interested in the same sex in her twenties. I get confused because some say she’s a lesbian and she calls herself a man, now a “legally” man. This is a crazy and confused world. Just because a person has dark skin and his skin has changed because of a disease like Vitiligo, it does not make them a caucasian. A person should not forget where they came from. I can change a lot of my features but it will never change who I really am since birth. People tend to want to be something else or somebody else except for themselves. Take Jocelyn Wildenstein who has features of a cat. It does not make her cat although people call her cat woman. What made her so unhappy of herself and her looks? What triggered this change… genes? Everything is about genes these days.

Is it a boy or a girl? A baby cannot name him/her self. I cannot name my self; I am either a man or a woman. Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual, transgender … My apologies in advance, but I’m afraid of what’s coming next. These are being “accepted” by society a bit. I’m happy in one hand because it will stop most of the abuse and discrimination against them. Then we have zoosexuality or zoophiles, ‘consensual’ incest, ephebophilia, pansexual, polysexual, asexual, pederasty, necrophiliac, pedophilia, nymphomania, satyriasis and so forth. Sooner or later some of these would love to fight for respect, acceptance and there human rights in society. These human behaviors have existed through all our history and in all culture. Is true identity being lost? I guess nobody will ever be “sexually”, “humanly”, “emotionally”, and “spiritually” satisfied. Would we have to accept every change with in time? This makes me think… how far will human rights go? I’m afraid because politicians would accept anything for a few votes even if it means to destroy a whole society, a country, or our world.

As a gender confused female I think I’ve got more insight then most of you to reply to this issue. Yes, legally he is a he, yet he is being selfish over the fact that he kept all of the female anatomy in tact just to have a baby. I feel as though he’s using this just for publicity. I do agree with what many of the other posters said that “if you show me a man that was born a man and somehow naturally became pregnant, then i’ll believe the story of the first man becoming pregnant. Until then, forget it.”
The way I look at it, until he at least has a hysterectomy, he cannot be considered a female. Even though he takes hormones he probably still has a light flow period, he still has the vagina and uterus and everything else that makes him a her.
If him and his wife are smart they’ll back out of the public scene before this goes any further. They’re only going to face harsher judgements against them as this pregnancy progesses.

Here is something to think about. What if a sex offender has an operation to permanently remain an underage teenager? Does time or circumstance change their treatment in a court of law? What if the offender is experiencing age identity disorder and they believe they are the same age as the consenting victim? We live in an age where accountability is flying out the window. Most female-to-male transsexuals don’t get sex reassignment surgery because it’s extremely difficult to make a fully functional penis (male-to-females have it a lot easier; basically all the surgery does is turn the penis outside in). And don’t think that people just wake up one day and say “Hey, I want to be the opposite sex!” and skip to the hospital and get the operation. One has to “transition” from one sex to the other and undergo psychiatric evaluation to make sure they can deal with it.
Biologically, no, Thomas Beatie isn’t a man and never will be. But legally he is and that’s all that matters in this case. I’m sure Oprah gave them a nice chunk of change to be on the show that they can put in the kid’s college fund. Hey gwenny, I’m with you. There is a lot of intellectual laziness, here. The main seems to be misunderstanding of the difference between sex and gender. Sex is defined by chromosomes and manifests as either one set of genitals or the other. Gender is the socially defined/imposed/adopted or challenged set of behavioral expectations and/or biases. It’s constructed by society and people are channeled into taking on one or the other.
Transgender is, basically, “cross-dressing”. Transsexual is sexual reassignment.
However, some people are just too prudish to say the word SEX so they use the word gender instead, thinking it’s the same thing. But it’s not.
Why is everyone so uncomfortable? The use of caps and authoritative “He’s not a he!” attitudes reveal a lot of fright. Allowing someone else to be happy does not threaten your own happiness. Thomas’ expression of gender does not have to mean YOU are any less of a man or woman. Women, you can still have babies if you want. Men, you can still consensually impregnate women women if you want. Don’t worry.
Just by looking at him (pre-pregnancy), would you have known about his uterus? How many of “them” do you think there are? Think of the “men” you know - does your mailman have a vagina? Your accountant? Or, gasp - your employer? I would encourage you to reflect on what makes a man a man, or what makes anything, anything.

This is crazy. Thomas Beatie is not a man, Thomas is a woman with some male features. Thomas was born as a woman so it is not some big deal that “he” can have children…all women can. Call me when a man who is a man physically (not just mentally or psychologically) gets pregnant, then we will have a story.

Okay, it took me a minute to understand what was really going on. First of all, congratulations! Having a baby is so exciting. I do not envy that child’s life. Kids are mean to each other in school. I hope your little one has a better life than I foresee. I do not have any ill will toward you. I think it’s great actually. I wouldn’t call you a ‘man’, in every sense, nor would I call you a ‘woman’. It’s hard to explain, but hang in there. Having a baby is stressful enough without the world on your back about it. I have a 4 month old. I thought she would never sleep through the night. It was stressful, I can’t imagine what you are going through right now, or what you will be going through for the next year. I bet your body is making some ‘fun’ changes. Every woman goes through changes when they have a baby, but your case is definately unique. I hope people stop judging you though. I believe in God, don’t get me wrong, but no matter how religious someone might be, it does not give them the right to judge. I wish you luck in your days ahead. I would also like to give my sympathy to your wife for not being able to bear children, it’s such a beautiful experience. Don’t be discouraged by what people think. That doesn’t matter. 1- So many poster’s have written that the pregnancy is not natural and that “he” is really a “she” in the same breath. Which one is it? Is the pregnancy totally natural because the man is actually female or is it unnatural because you can’t quite wrap your heads around it?
2- To the “scientists” who are posing the question of whether a woman with a mastectomy that grows facial hair is a man: you haven’t blown our minds, you just don’t get it. To be a man is to have a role in society, one that is ever changing and expanding, that in fact can (and is) defined by personal perspectives and community consensus. Gender assignments are anything but scientific (aside from social sciences I suppose).
3- Third, what evidence is there that the child will be harmed (mentally) by having unconventional parents. In the end the only reason the child might be mentally harmed is all the people who are judging his/her parents, and those people judging are the only people who are worried that the child will be harmed. . . that’s weird.
Finally gender is just as “scientific” as race. There is no defining line between one gender or another (even defining sex is tricky), and race and gender can be defined as much by their own choice as it is how they were born. I’m sure this zeitgeist (opinion of the era), will be looked on with as much shame by the next generation as we look upon older generations saying that interracial marriages and offspring are unnatural and abhorrent to god.

If this woman still has her female parts she isnt a man. That is what clearly defines what a male or female is. She can be called whatever she wants to at home or around her friends but when your talking to doctors and nurses, thery’re looking at you from a biological standpoint, she’s a female. If your baby is born they tell you the sex of it by looking at what parts it has. A nurse doesnt say it has female parts but it still might be a male. Technically, he was born a woman…which is really what “he” is. So technically, I don’t believe that this is a pregnant man, but it is a pregnant woman who looks like a man because of a sex change. To those concerned about testosterone: Thomas and his doctor have stated that he has NOT been taking testosterone supplements for well over two years in preparation for this pregnancy.
To those certain that secondary sex characteristics are what define gender and/or sex: Many people have genitalia that are at odds with their chromosomes or gender identity. Research “Androgen resistance syndrome” or “Congenital adrenal hyperplasia”. Those are just some variances among many (including variations of chromosomal arrangements where once can be XXX, XXY, or X).
To those who believe being pregnant means you cannot be male: Check out “Ectopic abdominal pregnancies”. They’re rare, and kind of dangerous, but prove you don’t need a uterus to grow a fetus.

This is a completely misleading and false story/headline. This is NOT a pregnant man. I’m not against what he/she is doing…because he/she is correct…it’s his family and he has every right to do this. However, “Thomas” is still a woman with an uterus, vagina and all other necessary anatomy to be able to create another human life. It’s a woman having a baby…dressed like a man. Nothing expectacular.

As a transman myself, this story bothers me; not the situation, at all, because I believe in live and let live. If this is what Thomas Beatie and his wife feel are best for them, then by all means, do it.
What bothers me, as a trans man, is knowing that after going through years of psychotherapy, hormone therapy, surgery, likely a difficult transitional period, and finally becoming a man, only doing what is, truly, the one REAL difference between men and women, then becoming a poster child for the trans community?
Not to say that this has never happened. Thomas Beatie is not the first trans man to do this! But by showing himself off in this way, by going on Oprah and doing interviews, that tells me?
He’s doing it for the money.
I am a man and I want to be looked at as such. But now, there will be a stigma or a precedent set for people outside of the trans community. I will never get pregnant! Why would I? I’m a man!

As stated by others gender is a social construct, the idea of gay and lesbian relationships are also a social construct; there are several cultures that do not idistincuish hetero or homosexual identities they wouldn’t even know the meaning of the terms.
While yes many trans men would not feel comfortable going through this process everyone should be entitled to do what they want with their own bodies. There are several women who should never be allowed to have children (ie some of these hateful people voicing their negative opinions here) it is still their right to do so.
Transitioning is a very intense process and I am sure, or would hope that there was much thought that went into this.
As for what to tell the little one in the future, this is not a conversation that will come out of the blue, this child will grow up understanding how it was brought into the world just like any parent would do with a hetero birth, a surrogate birth, or any other form of bringing a child into the world.

Love should create all children. Wouldn’t this prevent at least a small portion of child abuse, neglect, etc.? Instead of criticizing a couple that will be loving and supportive, shouldn’t we spend our energy trying to rescue the unwanted children that are left alone, sexually and physically abused, and treated so poorly that they add to our prison population? 2) it is not uncomment for a number of these components to be out of line with each other. For example, genetic and physiological sex can be in difference to each other (ie. Gynecomastia is a condition which causes breast enlargement in genetically male (XY) individuals).
3) Transsexualism occurs when psychological gender and/or neurological sex differs from genetic or physiological sex. A person may be born with XX chromosomes and female sexual characteristics, but are psychologically (and possibly neurologically) male.

First of all everyone needs to realiaze this not a man having a baby. He was born a women and at the time of him getting pregnant he still had women hormones and the ability to have a child. I have worked in the operating theatre during gender re-assignment operations, male - female. It is complicated and traumatic surgery which produces astonishing results.
However, I think that the report is ridiculous in stating that he is the first Man to be pregnant. In theory it is possible for a Male person to carry a human embryo in the pouch of douglas.
However, the risk of complications and loss of life are too profound for nature to allow this to happen. Thomas Beatie’s first pregnancy was ectopic, possibly in the pouch of douglas. In either case, male or female this is a potentially life threatening condition.
This ridiculous and factually incorrect report about a woman who has had bilateral mastectomy so as to emulate the appearance of a man has the potential to wreck this kids life.
Children are cruel and pick up on anything which may cause deep and lasting psychological harm and will use this to their advantage. I sincerely hope that the product of this pregnancy doesn’t suffer because of its parents decision to go public with their choice.

Thomas has been on testosterone therapy for so many years as to permanently change his physical appearance, even despite the fact he is no longer taking them during the pregnancy. His physical characteristics (the beard, facial features, chest hair) suggest latent amounts of testosterone circulating in his body. Even though physicians told him the pregancy would be fine, there is no accurate method of predicting how these altered hormonal levels will affect the developing fetus, nor can it be ruled out that Thomas’ altered hormone levels will not adversely affect fetal development. This is, in effect, a form of human experimentation. While Thomas perfomed the insemination at home (which undermines the medical profession’s stamp of approval), clinical providers of IVF should be cautious before allowing this option to other female to male transgender individuals.

Is it artificial insemination from a sperm donor or? Can a person who was born female and became male create true genetic offspring with a female person?
