A fight broke out at Las Misiones mall in Juarez, Mexico, prompted by an exchange of words between “emos” and “punks.” Sigh:
Juárez public safety secretary Guillermo Prieto Quintana in a news statement on Thursday said the police anti-gang unit would increase patrols at teen hangouts to discourage problems.
Prieto Quintana said that Mexico’s northern border has traditionally been tolerant of all types of expressions, and he urged teens to respect others’ right to self-expression.
The emo is a style and musical offshoot of punk music. Emos often sport dark hair covering part of their faces, dark clothing and an emotional outlook that has been described by some as effeminate, which might have fueled the mob attacks in the macho culture of Mexico.
We can feel our tubes tying themselves. We wonder why emo artists themselves, or popular musical figures in general, haven’t come forward to make any sort of announcement or appeal for the violence to end? Conor Oberst! Stop taking pictures of your hair and get on this!

“First they came for the emos, and I did nothing…”
Sure, there is something retro (and a little funny) about the anti-emo attacks, but they appear to be well organized, and possibly being used by PANistas to justify gay-bashing. And that, alas, ain’t so funny.

You know, Mexican Americans (and Mexicans) constantly complain about the way they’re treated in the states, and they even cite the increase in hate crimes against them (and other Latinos) as an example of how intolerant Americans have become.
Well, after seeing this crap in Mexico, I’m going to stop being sympathetic toward Brown Mexicans and their struggles (note: I never really was THAT sympathetic before, but that’s another issue). It’s a bit hypocritical to condemn others for being intolerant, while you YOURSELF are even MORE intolerant. I say deport Brown Mexicans who show any signs of machismo and xenophobia, which is most of them. I also say we offer Mexican emos a safe haven here in the states (we can send them to Alaska or something). And I’m willing to let a few of them stay in my garage. They can make me tacos and we can talk about how cruel the world is. We’d have so much fun … or, um, not … they’re always depressed, right? I hope they like Florida.
Anyhoo, that’s all for now, folks.
@Mexfiles: you deserve a thinking blog award, my friend.

@Guanabustanut
you are an idiot. your comments are irrelevant.
racial intolerance is not the same as intolerance of a lifestyle choice. i don’t promote any sort of intolerance but the worst one is xenophobia. and you are xenophobic and a hypocrite, WTF does this have to with Brown Mexicans?? what about the black, white and oriental ones?! will you still be sympathetic to them?
good luck i feel sorry for your crazy stupid ass. stay in florida.

iguana is a lost cause. that thing will always condemn anyone for not seeing another side (his flawed side), but will start acting retarded as soon as someone raises a valid point

OMG, this is great. I’ve been called an idiot and a retard so many times on this blog, that I’ve become desensitized to those two words. I just yawn and scratch my balls every time I see them.
@cookie: FYI, I do acknowledge good points. For example, I was nice to Mexfiles because he brought up a VALID point. I think you don’t like my comments (me?) because I’m not a Jessica Alba-hating Latino who believes everything the Latino activists (and others) try to shove down our throats. You’re right. I am a lost cause and I like it that way. I prefer to use my OWN brain, thank you very much.
@Ghys: First of all, don’t blame me for using the word “Brown.” Blame the Latino (Chicano?) activist who coined the term. I hate it (and I used it in my previous comment because that’s what’s normally used here on Guanabee). Latinos use the term interchangeably with Latino/Hispanic on a regular basis. It’s NOT my fault. I was also very specific. I didn’t say ALL Brown Mexicans. I said we should deport those who show signs of machismo and xenophobia (sadly, I think many do). So, I was talking about ALL Mexicans.
Mexfiles brought up an excellent point! He said that these anti-emo attacks appear to be well organized and this whole anti-emo uproar may be a sign of homophobia. You may not agree with him, but I do.
Ghys, maybe in your world, intolerance (and violence) toward people of color is more vile and/or problematic than intolerance (and violence) toward young men who don’t conform to Mexican gender norms. Ok, fine … I’ll accept your statement. You have every right to believe what you want to believe.
This is what I believe: Hate is hate. Intolerance is intolerance. Emo kids are being physically harmed by young Mexican men of various groups, and this type of behavior is even seen among normal working class men (which is surprising). It may be a form of homophobia. And that’s scary. So, Ghys, you may think that racial intolerance is the biggest sin of all—and I just don’t by that. Intolerance of every kind (toward people of color, gays, effeminate (straight) guys, and women) is equally reprehensible. That’s my point!
But what do I know. I’m a crazy idiot and a retard.

I think Juarez has more problems right now than Punk and Emo brawls! And btw to who ever said that it was a form of homophobia, that is really really not the likely cause of the violence. It is a fight that is bound to culture and fashion and musical tastes. Sure punks veiw emo kids as effeminant but that is not the point. I think that there is just a lot of tension in that city right now what with all the death since the begining of this year, and that tension is leaking on to the youth. hell even on my side of the river in El Paso some are scared of going into Juarez because 11 people just got exicuted over there! 33 in total this weekend. who wouldnt expect violence to be a part of the youth’s life in Juarez? I think this goes beyond the youth culture, deeper into a culture that is surrounded by violence and uncertainty. and I bet you anything that the punks were the ones to start the fight, but the emo kids i know in this city and that city are tough, so dont think they were just sitting back taking the punches and crying afterward. not your typical emo kids here.
