When Argentina Came To Play: Zizek At SOB’s Report

Zizek is a weekly party in Buenos Aires named after a Slovak philosopher who married a lingerie model. This week the deep thinkers and slutty divas of Zizek graced New York City’s SOB’s with their cumbia-clash soundtrack. Nacotheque joined the party, as well, creating a Latino hipster clusterfuck the likes of which downtown New York has probably never seen. We were there, of course, to let it all wash over us.
Zizek’s “urban beats club”–a Buenos Aires staple–made its way to New York after stopping in California and Austin. Tremor and Axel K came along to mash up everything from baile funk to reggaeton, hip hop, and 80’s classics all smothered in cumbia sauce, creating a unique soundscape that has become the Zizek signature. Vocalist Mariana performed for the crowd with all the charm of a beautiful Argentina. And deejay Remelon mashed up familiar hits with unfamiliar beats. We showed our appreciation by drinking copious amounts of beer.
In Buenos Aires, the Zizek recipe is a nice break from the colonial monotony rampant in the city clubs. Choices are mostly limited to American and English new wave, trance (or “punchi punchi” as it’s referred to by locals–which, let’s face it, is so much more fun to say), and r&b/ hip hop, ignoring homegrown musical treats like cuarteto, pachanga, or even rock nacional. Argentine cumbia is not generally played for a club crowd in the capital. And in NYC, the music was even stranger and full of more magical surrealism, leaving local Nacothequers wide-eyed without, we assume, the use of pharmaceuticals.
