America Ferrera Looks Like A Feminist

Do you often wonder what a feminist looks like? Well, according to a group called The Feminist Majority, a feminist can look like a lot of famous things! Like Lisa Loeb’s glasses, Allison Janney’s aloof confidence, America Ferrera’s “aw shucks” shrug and Rob Reiner’s cap! One guy here didn’t even know he was a feminist! There are even some non-famous people that find themselves absurdly promoting gender equality, but we fast-forwarded through those parts. Be careful, Guanabees. You might be next.

Wasn’t Daniel born and raised in Mexico? And isn’t it fair to say that Mexicans don’t really “get” feminism. Isn’t that right? Honestly, we live in the 21st century and Mexicans are still beating up on people who don’t conform to gender norms (we love you, Mexican emos!). Just sayin’.

Also, the people in this clip aren’t really feminist.

Cindy: you got me. I should have said this: it’s highly doubtful that any one of these individuals is a real, honest-to-goodness feminist. And I think many old school feminists would agree.

However, you’re right. For all we know, everyone in this clip is a (true) feminist, and I guess one can also argue that Eva Longoria actually has talent. Anything is possible. Right?

@Cindy: I’m certainly no expert but neither are you–unless having two ovaries makes you an expert on women’s issues and feminism.

Haven’t you been paying attention to what’s going on in the Democratic Party? Real, honest-to-goodness feminists–you know, the women who actually stood for something back in the day–are being treated like freaks in the Democratic Party. And some of their harshest critics are YOUNGER women. When I talk about feminism (or about being a feminist), I’m referring to the actual movement(s). As I said before, I find it highly doubtful that the actors in this clip are true feminists.

Also, I’m sure that any feminist scholar would say that feminism is a term that describes a broad set of values and cultures. So maybe in theory anyone who wants to be seen as a feminist can be considered one (which is total bs in my opinion). However, I don’t think that wearing a “girl power” t-shirt automatically makes you a feminist. And I don’t think that just saying “hey, I think women are cool and should have equal rights,” makes one a feminist–especially when one works in an industry that exploits women without giving them real decision-making power. Of course, these so-called feminists don’t mind accepting checks from the Hollywood studios that objectify women and perpetuate the subordinate status of women (note: “Knocked Up” by Jud Apatow is guilty of doing this . . . but very few women complained).

    Thanks for this lovely discussion.
