Because it’s a process slightly more complicated than delivering babies in your high school bathroom during a prom, here’s another round of the “Chola Makeup Tutorial.” This time, our favorite self-hatey blogger from Singapore (And, oh! How that list is long.), Xiaxue, teaches us how to apply fake lashes, to make our eyes look like beautiful crushed spiders winking up from the clearance bin at Fashion Bug. Enjoy!

How is this “chola” makeup exactly? Given the fact that even non-cholas wear falsies, and the reality that this woman’s devotion to fake lashes is based on some hardcore self hatred of her own “Chinese” lashes, I don’t see how the term applies at all…

@ aydiosmio: Have you seen her nails and makeup? It’s “Chola Makeup” Tutorial not “Makeup Tutorial By Cholas.” The young lady featured in the first tutorial was also not, actually, a chola.

And Wendy Cheng’s self-esteem, while possibly an interesting topic of conversation, is kind of irrelevant to the point of this post.

Oh come on. This whole “chola makeup tutorial” thing is just strange and misguided. You really aren’t bothered by the fact that she dislikes her very own eyes? And although I must say I am not very familiar with cholas, I don’t see how a tutorial on applying false eyelashes is “chola” at all. Many people wear false eyelashes. I’d venture to say that the girl in the video would be stunned to see her video presented as a “chola makeup tutorial”. It’s a tutorial on fake eyelashes, and the eyelashes (and eye makeup) are only used to alter her much disliked “chinese” eyes. The very motivation for her eye makeup routine is based on some sort of self hatred. And can you really brush aside the reality that many East Asian girls tend to dislike their natural eye shape? Eyelid crease surgery is very popular among Asians, I guess it’s because all those girls just love their body and have so much self esteem, huh? False eyelashes seem to be the most innocuous feature of “chola makeup”. If this were about prominent lipliner or drawn-in eyebrows, I could see how this is “chola”, but falsies? Really?

ay dios mio indeed. if satire has to be explained to you, you probably shouldn’t be reading guanabee. i’ll spell it out though: cholas are kinda ridiculous. xiaxue and her self-hating and materialism and false lashes, also pretty ridiculous.

there’s a way to make a point without having to spell it out in an essay in the comment thread of a blog. dig?
