Didn’t get to make it to Washington, D.C. for Pope Benedict XVI’s historic first visit? Now that he’s in New York, let’s take look back at those two magical days in our nation’s capital. The highlights, the low lights, the funny pictures! And there will be a quiz at the end. So pay attention. First up, at left, President Bush completes a Catholic rite of passage by “resting his eyes” during Pope Benedict’s “awesome speech.” No doubt he was up late putting the last minute touches on the seating chart for the 12,000 person birthday dinner he’s throwing for the Pope that the Pope is totally blowing off.

Pope Benedict takes his first steps off Shepherd One–the Vatican aircraft–and President Bush no doubt makes his first of many embarrassing comments.

That Pope Benny. So smoove with the ladies.

The Pope replaces his hat after a gust of wind from God almost revealed his antennae.

The Popemobile now comes with it’s own john.

If you look closely, you can actually see the toilet papal.

We found the Union Square graffiti artist

The only thing scarier than Benny is Mini-Benny.

America hearts chatchkis!

Doesn’t this guy look just like Richard Chamberlain in The Thornbirds????

And just like in real life, Richard Chamberlain turned out to be gay, too.
We never noticed those sick red shoes the Pope wears before.

Must have.

See, he only looks like Satan sometimes.

When he’s looking through you and when he’s wearing the red shoes.

It’s God and Pringles that fuel Mexican soul music.

Mariachis take a break, wait around for his Holiness.

A Mexican priest figures serving the Pope’s mass at Nationals Park is as close as he’ll ever come to playing on the winning team at La Copa Mundial.

Ale!

We don’t know why, but nuns always make us feel like they’re boring a hole through us with their eyes.

Catholic school flashbacks, anyone?

Update: Shit, we almost forgot the pop quiz. Okay, we did forget. Here it is: Can you find the disappearing American Catholic Church? That’s okay, neither can the Pope!

@Marco: The pope’s shoes are not made by Prada. That’s a rumor that’s been going around for a while, but it’s totally false. The shoes are provided by a company that has been providing papal footwear for a while, it’s the pope’s personal cobbler. Yes many Italian and international companies have given gifts to the pope, and Prada could be among them. But the red shoes have been a part of the pope’s outfit for hundreds of years,a vestige of the older tradition of the pope wearing all red, and we are only just not used to seeing a pope with red shoes because JPII chose to wear brown shoes from his homeland of Poland.

And “sheperd one” is not the vatican aircraft, it’s a plane donated by Alitalia.

And what’s up with the mexican flag priest? Is he trying to represent that small, forgotten demographic, the Mexican Catholic? How silly…
