Cuba Protests Protests, Blames United States

Following protests staged by the wives of jailed dissidents, a group of women who call themselves the “Ladies in White” because “Super Friends” was already taken, Cuba has accused the U.S. of using the women to “subvert the Cuban revolution.” Revolting indeed:

The Cuban government has accused the women of working for the US.

Washington responded by saying the women had the right to free assembly, as guaranteed by human rights accords which Cuba has signed.

The women’s husbands are among 75 people imprisoned during a 2003 crackdown on dissidents.

Fifty-five are believed to still to be behind bars.

Cuban police quickly broke up the protests and forcibly loaded the women onto buses. Which, hey, free ride, but doesn’t really do much in the way of improving Cuba’s image to the world at large.
