Fergie Explains Her Latinaness To Latina.Com
15 April 2008, 11:15 AM. By Alex Alvarez
Pea-pea pants Fergie recently talked exclusively with Latina.com about -how much she wants to cater to an even wider demographic- her Mexican roots. Fascinating:
When it comes to Fergie, there’s always been an unresolved question in Latinas’ minds—is she, or isn’t she, one of us? [Ed. note: I can honestly say I have been kept up many a night wondering whether I should personally revoke Fergie's Latina card.] The multi-platinum-selling solo artist is frequently said to be of mixed ethnicity, and she explained it this way herself to the The Independent in 2007: “My heritage is a complete mixture that includes Irish, Scottish and Mexican strains, and I don’t feel tied to any one culture.” Hmm…can you say confusing?
Can you say… this is exactly like most Americans? We don’t really see what’s confusing here. Then again, we’re a super foxy genius. Assassin. Blogger.
“Yes, I have Mexican in my ancestry,” said Fergie. “My Dad’s grandmother was born in Guanajuato. I’m very proud of it; that’s probably where I get my fire! I’m mostly Scottish-Irish, though.”
Yup. We are like little Tabasco bottles of fire. All of us. Face? Meet desk.

Ugh! Who cares … that’s like saying Carmen Electra is latina because her first name (or the first name of her pseudonym) is Carmen.
Fergie’s “latina roots” are so small they’re virtually non-existent. She even seems to own up to it by following her explanation with “I’m mostly Scottish-Irish though”
I’m still spicy … Fire, I’m on fire! It’s so hot! … Thank god for maracas and all this fruit on my head!! … Damn that Ambien!
I second that “ugh,” but for slightly different reasons… is this what the “new” Latina mag is all about now? Hunting down celebrity latin-octaroons and claiming ‘em? First Alba, now this hot tranny mess? Pretty lame…
After reading your entry, I’ve come to this conclusion: Fergie aint “Latina-licious!”
The only latin she has in her, was when she was ran through a train of latin homies….good times
Latina/o is the new black…..
@ricanhavoc: the new EIC at Latina magazine is Mimi Valdes. She ruined the mag by putting Alba on the cover, and now this. Even though she is Puerto Rican, and from New York, she seems to be invested in portraying a very cartoonish, watered down, stereotypical version of what a Latina is in her magazine, a version forged long ago by White American media and absorbed by a mostly White American audience. These are the assumptions held by people who have never really met or interacted with a real “Hispanic” person, who get all their info on “Latino” culture from the mainstream media. Fergie is technically what, 1/8th Hispanic? Really? Is there a one drop rule for Latin American roots as well? And being Hispanic means being “fiery” and “hot”? As a Puerto Rican, she should know that not all Hispanic people come from cultures where hot, spicy foods and chiles are the norm. WTF? Is Speedy Gonzalez going to get a column there now? Is La Cucaracha going to play when you visit their website? How embarrassing.
fergie just got owned
