She ruined the mag by putting Alba on the cover, and now this. Even though she is Puerto Rican, and from New York, she seems to be invested in portraying a very cartoonish, watered down, stereotypical version of what a Latina is in her magazine, a version forged long ago by White American media and absorbed by a mostly White American audience. These are the assumptions held by people who have never really met or interacted with a real "Hispanic" person, who get all their info on "Latino" culture from the mainstream media. Fergie is technically what, 1/8th Hispanic? Really? Is there a one drop rule for Latin American roots as well? And being Hispanic means being "fiery" and "hot"? As a Puerto Rican, she should know that not all Hispanic people come from cultures where hot, spicy foods and chiles are the norm. WTF? Is Speedy Gonzalez going to get a column there now?
