Josef F, a 73-year-old Austrian man, has been arrested after it was discovered that he had kept his daughter, Elisabeth, imprisoned in the family basement for 24 years. He raped her repeatedly, producing seven children, one of whom died shortly after birth and was incinerated by Josef. His wife, Rosemarie, has said she was unaware of what her husband was doing and had been lead to believe her daughter had one missing. She also claimed her husband had explained the three children allowed to live outside the basement had been dropped on their doorstep by their missing daughter. One of the three who had never seen daylight, 19-year-old Kerstin, was removed from the basement after falling ill:
The alleged crimes came to light after the teenager, named as Kerstin F, was dropped off at the Amstetten hospital last weekend.
Finding Kerstin seriously ill, doctors appealed for her mother, who at that time was assumed to be missing, to come forward to provide more details about her medical history.
Elisabeth and her other children were then removed from the home and questioned by authorities:
The mother, named as Elisabeth F, has been receiving medical and psychological treatment since being discovered.
She appeared “greatly disturbed” psychologically during questioning and agreed to talk only after authorities assured her that she would no longer have to have contact with her father, and that her children would be taken care of, police added.
The mother never ventured into the basement, not once, in twenty-four years? Ok. God. We promise we’ll post something nicer later on. We need something nice. Like a cupcake. Laced with Oxycontin.

The first time I read this story on the internets it registered as disbelief, then I couldn’t stop thinking about the mother because surely she’d turned a blind eye, because how could she not notice, right? And everyone seems to be grabbing their pitchforks. Then I read this:
“Police said Fritzl, an electrical engineering technician by training, had told investigators how to enter the basement prison through a small hidden door, operated by a remote control only he had known about.”
Then apparently, there was a false concrete wall with cans on it or something…so that may or may not explain the mother’s possible ignorance.
But I’d venture to guess that if this man could rape and keep prisoner his own daughter and grand/children, he probably had a psychologically and/or physically abusive relationship with his wife that firmly controlled her as well.
I don’t know. I feel it might be unfair to pass judgment on the mother, when Interpol couldn’t get their act together on this for 24 years…and oh yeah it was the father doing the evil.

@ Maria_Elena: That’s a good point. The father is, obviously, unbalanced and I’m sure that anyone in a long-term relationship with him would have to, either initially or as a result, psychologically suffer in some way.
