<description>@ Maria_Elena: That's a good point. The father is, obviously, unbalanced and I'm sure that anyone in a long-term relationship with him would have to, either initially or as a result, psychologically suffer in some way.

<description>The first time I read this story on the internets it registered as disbelief, then I couldn't stop thinking about the mother because surely she'd turned a blind eye, because how could she not notice, right? And everyone seems to be grabbing their pitchforks. Then I read this:

"Police said Fritzl, an electrical engineering technician by training, had told investigators how to enter the basement prison through a small hidden door, operated by a remote control only he had known about."

Then apparently, there was a false concrete wall with cans on it or something...so that may or may not explain the mother's possible ignorance.

But I'd venture to guess that if this man could rape and keep prisoner his own daughter and grand/children, he probably had a psychologically and/or physically abusive relationship with his wife that firmly controlled her as well.

I don't know. I feel it might be unfair to pass judgment on the mother, when Interpol couldn't get their act together on this for 24 years...and oh yeah it was the father doing the evil.
