FOX News Continues Their Grand Tradition Of Acting / Treating Women Like Asses

A Spanish clinic in Cádiz attempted to cut their female nursing staff’s 30 euro productivity bonus when nurses came to work wearing jogging pants, like their male co-workers, instead of miniskirts. Nurses complained that the skirts made them feel like they were on display and impeded their ability to properly attend to patients. Cue FOX News’ “Redeye,” which reported on the matter in as mature and nuanced a fashion as you might expect.
“Maxim Sirius Satellite Radio’s” Diana Falzone thinks the uniforms will help with patient morale, especially since the Spanish nurses, as “Latinas” are likely to have “big butts.” Kerry Howley, Senior Editor of the curiously-named Reason Magazine thinks the uniforms are ok as long as it’s in a “sexy hospital.” Like the kind where people have their sexy, cancerous tumors removed? The kind where burn victims can get all sexy again? Who knows! Then, of course, there’s the argument that nurses might have “gone the way of stewardesses” and are no longer attractive enough to be wearing anything but paper bags and barrels.
We suspect this is all presented as being satirical, but, you know. It just isn’t funny. This isn’t a subjective analysis of Redeye’s humor, it’s just not funny that men and women are allowed to get away with making patently offensive misogynist remarks under the guise of humor. There’s a difference between joking and mocking, between drawing attention to the absurdity of a certain behavior and acting like an asshole to get a cheap laugh. If these jokes were racist or homophobic, sure, they might still be passed off as irony or satire, but you can be sure they would have inspired much, much more of an outcry. “Latinas have bigger butts” is not a compliment. It’s a misogynist and xenophobic statement that mocks what these Spanish nurses are going through and fighting against.

Um, memo to Fox News: People from Spain are not “Latinos”. And “napping”? Really? But then again, there’s a reason this show airs in the middle of the night (I think it airs after midnight), even Fox wouldn’t air such things in the daytime.

@Aydiosmio. What makes a person “Latin”? Doesn’t “Latin” refer to people who speak Romance Languages, at least by some definition? The Spanish, French, Italians, bleh, I forget the rest. Didn’t this blog suggest that Spaniards were Latin? I’m not clear on the popular consensus, anyone?
@ laura: I believe “Latino” is used to refer to Latin Americans, but “Latins” can refer to the Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and to Romanians, as well as Latinos.

Lighten up a little on the racial bias but go after the exploitation angle from a compensation standpoint…now, that’s really salary discrimination and should be prosecuted ..if you can find a female judge in Cadiz…
I also would note from another angle that my male counterparts tip more to SYT waitresses that know , like the playboy bunnies of old, how to serve a mean martini while bending over to show their charms…
