So, what’d you all think? It was mostly a lot of fluff, like looking at baby clothes they picked out and talking about family, and Oprah didn’t really get too deep into discussions on gender and sexuality - which we really weren’t expecting anyway.
Two things really bothered us though:
The effort put into making us very aware that Thomas is manly and masculine and does stuff like flex muscles and wield a baseball bat to protect his house and the fact that the couple felt it appropriate to mention that Thomas has a book coming out soon, so it doesn’t matter as much if they lose their business over going public with this pregnancy. This especially bothers us because, when asked by Oprah why they were doing this - going public, that is - they responded that they wanted to tell “their story” in their own words. Which is fine, sure, but it turns the entire focus inward instead of extending what they are going through to apply to, and potentially guide, other queer people who might be going through similar circumstances.
We wish all the best to Thomas, Nancy and their families though. Their lives are not going to be easy from here on out but they did seem extremely committed to one another and to raising their daughter.
4:53 I kind of tuned out what Oprah was saying about a “new Earth” or somesuch but I’m sure the entire audience will be repeating it to themselves tonight.
4:52 Ohhh so Thomas has a book to promote… Wow. Hmm.
4:50 Thomas is talking about a home invasion. I think this is kind of setting it up to show Thomas as “masculine.” He said he came downstairs ready to protect his family and his home.
4:47 Neighbor George just called the situation “sexually dyslexic.” He’s a poet.
4:45 Their neighbors are so tragically hip. George is wearing a black turtleneck and a soul patch. And Victoria has a probably fake accent.
4:40 Nancy’s daughters are cute!
4:36 I like Nancy’s coat. And the fact that she “impregnated” her husband. I wonder if that had any sort of affect on either’s perception of their role in the relationship. I’d think it would. Also, how weird to just have this container of sperm sitting next to your leftover meatloaf?
4:31 They’re from “Bend, Oregon?” Tee! That’s mildly amusing.
4:30 My god damn ovaries are making me tear up. Baby! Ultrasounds are amazing. I wonder what they’ll name the girl. I vote “Guanababy.”
4:26 I’m still really stuck on Thomas’ assertion that being pregnant doesn’t make him feel more feminine. I’m actually not sure I believe that at all.
4:22 I’d think being pregnant would really alter one’s performance of gender. I know my having a cock totally messes things up for people. Oops.
4:18 Aw! Don’t make the poor dude discuss size. He’s blushing.
4:15 Haha the audience is SO uncomfortable. They’re all so quiet. And wearing pastels.
4:13 Is his wife primarily attracted to women? She was against his transition. That’s got to be… pretty tough.
4:11 Oprah’s really awesome at feigning concern.
4:09 Where’d they get the semen?
4:07 Is Oprah trying to insinuate Thomas was just sexually confused by bringing up the fact that his mother died when he was 12? I really don’t like her top.
4:00 These women in the audience are absolutely horrified.
So we’re liveblogging (we wore pants for the occasion and everything) pregnant transman Thomas Beatie’s appearance on Oprah starting… now! Hold tight to your fetuses, boys and girls.
