Catholics in Washington D.C. are hella mad over a Metro ad featuring a bobble-head pope. The online ad aims to encourage people to use mass transit in order to attend the upcoming Papal Mass:

In the ad, an enlightened commuter begins to chant in Latin, thanking heaven for Metro. Then viewers follow a miniature bobble head Pope Benedict riding with an all-day fare card.

Denise Moore found it absolutely hilarious and effective. “I like it. I think he’d like it too.”

We hope you’ll still be laughing when you’re burning eternally, Denise Moore.

Yet, just hours after it was posted, the Archdiocese of Washington complained to Metro that the ad was inappropriate.

“This is the Holy Father. This is a leader of a faith of a billion people founded by Christ and he’s going to lead us in a sacred mass. It’s a religious moment,” said Susan Gibbs with the Archdiocese of Washington.

Some Metro riders agree the ad is in poor taste. “The guy said thank heaven. When you’re religious or somewhat religious, you’re like you don’t want to play with our religion that much,” said Isabella Jones.

We, too, our gravely offended by this bobble-head pop. As should anyone with aesthetic sensibilities not cultivated through Urban Outfitters catalogues.

OH OH! Does this mean they’re gonna have like Pope Benedict Bobble Head Night. First 1,000 Communion Receivers get a free Benedict Bobble Head? Let me know when they’re handing out John Paul Bobble Heads!

@Chicano Renacimiento. You know, I would feel bad about the John Paul Bobble Heads, it would remind me too much about the Parkinson’s “shakes” that he had. Pobrecito.

Will someone let me know when the Benedict Action doll comes out, the one with extra Goose step action.

I’m a little surprised that people are offended. I mean, have you seen the kind of kitsch we Catholics eat up? My mom has Jesus Christ nightlights around the house. Nightlights!! And a mess of those creepy portraits they sell at the swap meet in which His eyes open and close when you move the picture back and forth. I thought the bobblehead was mild… and now I will be taking the metro to the papal mass.
