Tania Gómez Ginfarre, a contestant on talent show “Operación Triunfo,” Spain’s version of “American Idol,” was recently the target of a little squabble over what the show’s people would call her girlfriend of four years, Laura. Instead of “Laura” or “girlfriend:”
“Her name is Tania Gómez Ginfarre, she’s 25 years old and she went to the casting with her girlfriend of four years, Laura. In the first program she sang ‘En que estrella estaras’ by Nina Daconte. While the husband of the gay male contestant was introduced as his ‘boyfriend,’ Laura was referred as Tania’s ‘partner,’ which upset some viewers.”
Question: Have any of “American Idol’s” contestant been openly gay during filming? We know a few (cough Clay Aiken, cough Mario Vazquez) have been subject to speculation and Nikki McKibbin came out sometime after her season wrapped up, but have any been out, publicly, during their time on the show?
Lesbian Spanish Idol [After Ellen]

I think you’re mixing things up a bit… The openly gay male contestant is married (legal in Spain, of course). So his “man” is always referred to as his husband, not his boyfriend because that’s what he is.
Tania G isn’t married to her girlfriend, so of course they don’t use the same terminology. When you aren’t married you can call say “novio/novia” or “pareja”… neither is more legit.I’m not sure if they used novia or pareja to refer to Tania G’s girlfriend, but it was very obvious that she was gay and her girlfriend was in the audience and they kissed and it wasn’t a big deal at all. Spain isn’t like the U.S., things are much, much more open here.
