Polygamist Wives From Juniper Creek Bring Out Their Fancy Hairdos On “Today”

We don’t have anything against Mormons, per se. Or polygamy. We do, however, find puffed sleeves utterly offensive. Oh, and child abuse. Also bad. And while we feel for mothers torn away from their children, the three women from Juniper Creek, a community under investigation for allegations of child abuse, who made an appearance on the “Today” show were so completely odd that we find it extraordinarily difficult to empathize with them. Watch the clip and let us know what you think.

Between the time lag and the women’s glazed non-responses to Meredith’s questions, the entire thing was deeply disturbing. Their poofy dresses and PTA lady hairdos aside, the two women who directly addressed the camera didn’t look much past their mid-20s - but they had something like 9 children between them.

But here’s a thing: take away the silly hairdos, the granny dresses and the pasty complexions. Put them in my neighborhood on a velveteen couch sitting next to their nanas watching telenovelas. Hmmm…this looks kinda familiar.

We may not look like escapees from Little House on the Prairie or talk like pod people, but we’re just not that different.

She reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons where Homer claims there’s an alien and it turns out to be Mr. Burns, who’s been taking medicines that make him sound/look like an alien…
