It’s that time again. No, not time for you to snort coke off a midget’s tits. That happens about 12 hours from now, overzealous. We’re talking about the Friday Fresa Flashback. This week, we’re enjoying a little Emo Cumbia courtesy of Caifanes. Member them??? (Remember when TMZ hadn’t ruined that phrase?) It’s La Negra Tomasa, the song on everyone’s boombox circa 1990. Okaaaaay? Enjoy.

i’m sorry but ciafanes has never been nor will ever be fresa, caifanes is naco to the bone

can you never use the word “emo” again? especially here as it makes NO SENSE and is anarchronistic.
Posted by frankie | May 03, 2008
Daniel Mauser, you need to hire someone to review all posts before they’re published. Cindy has a tendency of not knowing what she’s talking about. See above comments. ‘nuff said!

GBAN has a point. “La negra Tomasa” is not an emo cumbia, it’s just a cumbia. Timbiriche & Garibaldi are more fresa than Caifanes.

I see the “Fresa Gestapo” is in full effect. Hey bozos, it’s a song from a old popular band, sorry it’s not fresa enough for you. And “Guana bust a nut,” nice name, you dipstick, you wouldn’t be on this site everyday if it wasn’t for La Cindy and staff posting entertaining and silly content daily. Guana, you idiot, they have “hire someone to review all posts before they’re published,” it’s called an editor! I bet you work for the government counting pencils and toliet paper supplies. Yeah, Guanabee should hire you as the “Fresa Monitor,” that way you can tell these accomplished writers what to and not to post, based on your amazing journalistic and “Fresa” background you coffee cup holder. Ahh I feel so much better, have a nice Sunday…

@Saucido: Hm, judging by your comments, you’re just like me and Cindy. We’re birds of a feather. Maybe we should start a dipstick club or something. Ok, now let me address your points.
Let the rant begin:
Re: “you wouldn’t being on this site everyday if it wasn’t for La Cindy and staff”: I want to make it clear that I am here because of Alex Alvarez. I’ve said it before and I’ll keep on saying it.
Re: “hire someone to review all posts before they’re published,” it’s called an editor”: Yes, I know what an editor is, but thanks for clarifying. Now, the reason I didn’t use the word editor in my previous comment is because Cindy IS the “editor” of this site. So … by encouraging Daniel Mauser to hire “someone to review all posts,” I’m essentially saying that he needs someone to keep Cindy (Guanabee’s main editor) in check. But maybe you’re right; I should have been more explicit. I should have said, “Cindy sucks as an editor.” Also, I never said that I’m an expert in all things Fresa. I just said that Cindy has a tendency of not knowing what she’s talking about.
Also, if you’re suggesting that this site should be treated as some kind of journalistic enterprise and/or that these bloggers deserve our respect, then I think you’re the one who works for the government—cleaning toilets and other good stuff. I’ve read posts on this site that were wildly inaccurate. So, if you want to consider what this site does journalism, then you’re an idiot because they have a tendency of getting facts wrongs and/or being way off base on their assessments. And since Cindy is the “editor,” she’s responsible for checking the facts before a post sees the light of day.
Thanks for the constructive criticism, Saucido. Dipsticks should always help each other out. You rock!

Emo, Fresa, Naco, who really gives a shit? Are people really upset by this?
Fact check: GBAN weighs 289 pounds and calls himself “big boned.” And also has syphilis. Just the facts peeps.
Besotes puto.

The term fresa flashback is not meant to imply that the featured group will be fresa. It’s simply an alliterative title meant to connote nostalgia for bygone latin american pop music. Seriously, if you don’t get that, it reveals more about your reading comprehension skills than you probably want people to know. Ditto for my use of the word emo. I called them emo because of their fashion—not the music. There’s no such thing as emo-cumbia music. In fact, there are those who would say there’s no such thing as emo music period. It’s more of a fashion thing. Caifanes look like The Cure singing cumbia, for fuck’s sake. God, it’s depressing how humorless some Latinos are.

@lacindy
stop making excuses.
Posted by lelly | May 05, 2008
@La Cindy: Maybe if your jokes were any good we wouldn’t be so humorless. Why don’t you watch some Don Francisco and learn some of his tricks, ah, pinche gringa?
Posted by pablo shore | May 05, 2008
Don Francisco—I can only dream.
Posted by La Cindy | May 05, 2008
Obviously everybody is touchy about how this, but I agree with Cindy the terms Fresa and Emo are meant to describe an epoch and a fashion movement. Some will like it and some will not. And oh,@pablo shore: Just squeeze some lime on your butthole and suck it up, no need to get nasty here.

I thought this blog was against physically defining nicknames for women…Negra Tomasa? Is there a double standard because this song is older?
Well. Nevermind. I love Caifanes.

@ la cindy comment, “The term fresa flashback is not meant to imply that the featured group will be fresa. It’s simply an alliterative title meant to connote nostalgia for bygone latin american pop music.”
… i think we understand that you are giving us a flash back, but make sure you know what the flash back is… are you really saying that caifanes is/was a pop group? I think you really need to be careful when labeling music. especially when it comes to bands that have crazy fans that will die for them and take anything personal when someone says anything wrong about their fav rockeros.
Posted by el vampiro | May 05, 2008
Me vale madre.. Los Caifas used to ROCK!! Maybe they are considered fresa by street standards cuz the people that listen to this are already grown up, act and dress better than when this band came out. Back when this came out, it was all about chicos y chicas de la calle listening to Caifanes. In TJ this band was worshipped by Rockeros, Punks, Surfos, Cholos, Stoners, etc. Fresas of that era listened to Timbiriche, Luis Miguel, Cristian, Mecano, Yuri, Thalia, and Magneto among others. Other bands with credible street cred and still rock to this day are…La Cuca, La Maldita, La Cafeta, Panteon Rococo, Tijuana No (Julieta Venegas), Victimas de Dr Cerebro, and of course Mana before they got really famous.
Posted by BoozR | May 05, 2008
@boozR: Mana has street cred? Bwa ha ha. Thanks for illustrating your musical knowledge. Now I know not to take anything you say seriously.
@vampiro: Absolutely Caifanes was popular music. They were top 40 Latin Rock. Pop has not always been Britney Spears sounding stuff. Pop is short for popular music. Whatever is mainstream at the time is popular music. I don’t know if you guys are old enough to remember, but Negra Tomasa was EVERYWHERE in 1990. It played on MTV en español for christ’s sake. You guys in TJ may have thought you were all cutting edge, but you weren’t. And they are not fresas, but everyone including fresas listened to them. And i’m so sick of explaining how to boil water to you people. ya. basta.
Posted by La Cindy | May 05, 2008
@LaCindy Don’t let the bastards get you down. What a humorless bunch.
Posted by nanita | May 05, 2008
First of all, I think it’s total bs that Cindy uses, here and on other occasions, the “Latinos are stupid and/or don’t have a sense of humor” line when people don’t “get” what she’s trying to say. Of course, she rarely considers the possibility that she may be wrong or misguided. Whatever.
Honestly, I don’t get why anyone would think that people are humorless because they criticize Cindy. An alliteration, as I’m sure you know, is used to emphasize a particular phrase. That’s all. We can give Cindy a cookie for trying to be clever, sure, why not; but the phrase “Friday Fresa Flatchback” may come across differently to different people. How are people supposed to know that Cindy intended it to mean a certain thing? We’re not psychic. Also, by considering people’s reaction to your use of the terms fresa and emo as demonstrating a lack of humor, you’re showing a very narrow-minded understanding of what humor is. Your target audience is very diverse, and just because you THINK something should be funny, doesn’t mean that it IS (or should be) funny (to everyone).
Man, I’m sick of explaining to Cindy that Latinos aren’t stupid.
Posted by Guana Bust A Nut | May 06, 2008
@Guana: But yet you keep illustrating it.
Posted by La Cindy | May 06, 2008
Cindy, you are back on my cool list after putting boozR in his place for thinking mana has street cred. haha
Posted by el vampiro | May 06, 2008
It was her use of Emo and Cumbia to describe La Negra Tomasa that made me laugh. That was clever and pretty accurate. No, not in historical terms, but it’s pretty dead-on.
and for the poor soul who says people die over this sort of talk… jesus, maria y jose, don’t we have more important issues than how your favorite band (from twenty fucking years ago!) is described in a blog?
