<description>It was her use of Emo and Cumbia to describe La Negra Tomasa that made me laugh. That was clever and pretty accurate. No, not in historical terms, but it's pretty dead-on.

and for the poor soul who says people die over this sort of talk... jesus, maria y jose, don't we have more important issues than how your favorite band (from twenty fucking years ago!) is described in a blog?

<description>First of all, I think it's total bs that Cindy uses, here and on other occasions, the "Latinos are stupid and/or don't have a sense of humor" line when people don't "get" what she's trying to say. Of course, she rarely considers the possibility that she may be wrong or misguided. Whatever.

Honestly, I don't get why anyone would think that people are humorless because they criticize Cindy. An alliteration, as I'm sure you know, is used to emphasize a particular phrase. That's all. We can give Cindy a cookie for trying to be clever, sure, why not; but the phrase "Friday Fresa Flatchback" may come across differently to different people. How are people supposed to know that Cindy intended it to mean a certain thing? We're not psychic. Also, by considering people's reaction to your use of the terms *fresa* and *emo* as demonstrating a lack of humor, you're showing a very narrow-minded understanding of what humor is. Your target audience is very diverse, and just because you THINK something should be funny, doesn't mean that it IS (or should be) funny (to everyone).

Man, I'm sick of explaining to Cindy that Latinos aren't stupid.

<description>@boozR: Mana has street cred? Bwa ha ha. Thanks for illustrating your musical knowledge. Now I know not to take anything you say seriously.

@vampiro: Absolutely Caifanes was popular music. They were top 40 Latin Rock. Pop has not always been Britney Spears sounding stuff. Pop is short for popular music. Whatever is mainstream at the time is popular music. I don't know if you guys are old enough to remember, but Negra Tomasa was EVERYWHERE in 1990. It played on MTV en español for christ's sake. You guys in TJ may have thought you were all cutting edge, but you weren't. And they are not fresas, but everyone including fresas listened to them. And i'm so sick of explaining how to boil water to you people. ya. basta.

<description>Me vale madre.. Los Caifas used to ROCK!! Maybe they are considered fresa by street standards cuz the people that listen to this are already grown up, act and dress better than when this band came out. Back when this came out, it was all about chicos y chicas de la calle listening to Caifanes. In TJ this band was worshipped by Rockeros, Punks, Surfos, Cholos, Stoners, etc. Fresas of that era listened to Timbiriche, Luis Miguel, Cristian, Mecano, Yuri, Thalia, and Magneto among others. Other bands with credible street cred and still rock to this day are...La Cuca, La Maldita, La Cafeta, Panteon Rococo, Tijuana No (Julieta Venegas), Victimas de Dr Cerebro, and of course Mana before they got really famous.

<description>@ la cindy comment, "The term fresa flashback is not meant to imply that the featured group will be fresa. It’s simply an alliterative title meant to connote nostalgia for bygone latin american pop music."

... i think we understand that you are giving us a flash back, but make sure you know what the flash back is... are you really saying that caifanes is/was a pop group? I think you really need to be careful when labeling music. especially when it comes to bands that have crazy fans that will die for them and take anything personal when someone says anything wrong about their fav rockeros.

<description>I thought this blog was against physically defining nicknames for women. . .Negra Tomasa? Is there a double standard because this song is older?

Well. Nevermind. I love Caifanes.

<description>Obviously everybody is touchy about how this, but I agree with Cindy the terms Fresa and Emo are meant to describe an epoch and a fashion movement. Some will like it and some will not. And oh,@pablo shore: Just squeeze some lime on your butthole and suck it up, no need to get nasty here.

<description>The term fresa flashback is not meant to imply that the featured group will be fresa. It's simply an alliterative title meant to connote nostalgia for bygone latin american pop music. Seriously, if you don't get that, it reveals more about your reading comprehension skills than you probably want people to know. Ditto for my use of the word emo. I called them emo because of their fashion--not the music. There's no such thing as emo-cumbia music. In fact, there are those who would say there's no such thing as emo music period. It's more of a fashion thing. Caifanes look like The Cure singing cumbia, for fuck's sake. God, it's depressing how humorless some Latinos are.
