They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But we think, sometimes, it’s worth stabbing yourself in the eye with a fork. That should totally not dissuade you from captioning this Texas protester, though. We mean, we would, but we’re only a college graduate and not a Nobel Laureate like this woman and Spanish was our first language, so. Our English might not be up to par.

Someone should definitely inform her that Texas had been part of the Spanish-speaking colonies longer than it was part of the English ones. Since, y’know, she’s down in Houston. If gas didn’t cost so much, I’d go down there and smack her upside the head with a dictionary.

HA! Just a couple of weeks ago this old man cornered me, and asked me why it is that “Spanish people” refuse(!) to learn English (after he told me I “didn’t look Hispanic” and I had to explain we don’t share a race, etc, but.) So I smoothed down my shirt, crooked up the side of my mouth and calmly talked to him about the cultural amnesia that comes to (white) first generation immigrants learning English, and…well I’m not going to get upset restating the long speech I said, but I gave him the whats-for.
Anyhoozle, the last point I always make is that Americans should be more concerned with mastering their own damn language skills before worrying about anyone else’s. Reading levels and writing scores are a joke in this country.
That they’re also blind to the fact that they are the only ones who don’t encourage their kids to be bilingual, and look down on other languages is equally infuriating, and I’m sorry but I refuse to listen to criticism (thinly veiled racism) from the same people who have no problem contributing to the dumbing down of society by being willfully ignorant.
Also! Please explain to me how they know that when they hear people speaking Spanish, they don’t also speak perfect English? Do they tap them on the shoulder? Mind read? I wish they’d tell me; I’d love to know.

@Maria_Elena
Obnoxious assumptions aren’t just for white folks! I can’t tell you how many of the old ladies in my neighborhood have slagged me right in front of my face, thinking that just because I don’t look mestizo I couldn’t possibly know that they’re laughing at my haircut, grocery purchases, etc., because they’re speaking the Secret Code of SPANISH!

@Maria Elena: I am embarrassed to say I have only recently figured that out too, that Americans think people they see/hear speaking Spanish in the street don’t know how to speak English. At first I didn’t want to believe it, because the whole assumption is beyond ridiculous, but a recent encounter made it all too real.I think it’s because when people grow up speaking only one language and maybe never managing to master a second language despite years of language instruction in school and college (and face it, the majority of people who grow up taking Spanish and French in high school are nowhere near fluent), and so they look to being “monolingual” as a way of life, and can’t really understand the life of someone who is fully fluent in two or more languages. It’s a misunderstanding based on ignorance and lack of perspective, but whatever, I digress…
