Maria Soledad Vela Wants Your Right To Have Happy Sex Added To Ecuador's Constitution

couple_5.5.08.jpg

Maria Soledad Vela is among several people revising and rewriting Ecuador’s constitution and she would like to ensure that women are not left off the list. As such, she’s proposed that woman’s right to “enjoy sexual happiness” be added to the constitution in order to protect women from being seen as the passive party in intercourse, or as simply vessels for carrying babies:

Ms Soledad Vela is a member of the governing party on the Constituent Assembly that is rewriting the country’s constitution.
Its aim, among other things, is to ensure a better distribution of wealth and rights for indigenous communities and the poor.
Women, she believes, should not be left off that list.
But her comments have provoked a lively response - mostly, unsurprisingly, from men.
Opposition assembly member, Leonardo Viteri, accused her of trying to decree orgasm by law.
Another called the proposal “ridiculous” and said that such an intimate topic should stay intimate and not be enshrined in law.
Ms Soledad Vela responded to the criticism, saying she had never requested the right to an orgasm - merely the right to enjoy sex in a free, fair and more open society.

What do you think? Is this a step forward for women in Ecuador? Or a case of bringing the government out of public bathroom stalls and into the bedroom?

Wait…is there some law against women in Ecuador enjoying sex? Because the way most of the world works, if there’s no law against it, people figure it’s okay. And sometimes, even if there IS a law against it, people will go ahead and do it anyway.

Maybe they’re just not doing it with babes from Ecuador.

I think this proposal falls way short in that it should ensure all sexual and reproductive rights, from having an orgasm to having an abortion to having a baby. Because the way most of the world works, unless women’s rights are enshrined in a constitution or other code of law, people figure it’s ok to egregiously violate them as soon as possible.

@Bronx: Agreed. Obviously this is a reaction to societal issues. I’d also like to know how her proposal was worded. But I think the best part was:

Opposition assembly member, Leonardo Viteri, accused her of trying to decree orgasm by law.

It would seem Mr. Viteri has a sweaty brow?

We have to think ourselves about a simple thing
that is in front of our eyes but noone is talking
about it…Why the hell nature gifted women with
clitoris..?Women have the right to feel good,to live
their life, and there’s no real life if you are a woman
and you have not experienced orgasms.
No orgasms no fun.And yes,it is a man’s “duty”,
responsibility to give women what they like most.
You give her no orgasms, you’re such ann as___le
if you believe that it’s all okey.
